Midfielder Brek Shea was the only holdover in the U.S. starting lineup for the Americans' exhibition game against Italy on Wednesday night.
Coach Jurgen Klinsmann changed 10 starters from the team that won 1-0 at Panama last month, which was not on a FIFA fixture date.
Tim Howard was in goal, with Steve Cherundolo at right back, Clarence Goodson and captain Carlos Bocanegra in central defense and Fabian Johnson at left back.
The 4-2-3-1 formation included Michael Bradley and Maurice Edu in defensive midfield; and Danny Williams, Clint Dempsey and Brek Shea in the advanced midfield. Jozy Altidore was at forward.
Several regulars were missing from the American lineup, including midfielder Landon Donovan (bronchitis), and defenders Timmy Chandler (hamstring) and Oguchi Onyewu (knee).
For Italy, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon moved into sole possession of third place on the Azzurri appearance list with 113, one more than Dino Zoff and trailing only Fabio Cannavaro (136) and Paolo Maldini (126).
The rest of the Italian lineup had Christian Maggio at right back; Angelo Ogbonna and Andrea Barzagli in central defense; Domenico Criscito at left back; Andrea Pirlo, Antonio Nocerino, Thiago Motta and Claudio Marchisio in midfield; and Sebastian Giovinco and Alessandro Matri at forward.
Mario Balotelli was not on the roster.
