Klaus Allofs is leaving Werder Bremen after 13 years as manager to join Bundesliga rival Wolfsburg in the same position.

Wolfsburg chief executive Thomas Roettgermann confirmed the move Wednesday.

Allofs and coach Thomas Schaaf had a successful partnership in Bremen. The club won the Bundesliga title in 2004 and the German Cup in 2004 and 2009.

In most Bundesliga clubs, the jobs of coach and manager are separate. The manager's primary duty is to sign players - and coaches.

Allofs succeeded in creating good Werder squads with limited means. Big-spending Wolfsburg is backed by the auto maker Volkswagen.

Wolfsburg fired Felix Magath last month. Magath combined the two jobs. Under interim coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner, Wolfsburg has a 2-1 record.
