Genoa returned to winning ways after back-to-back draws, defeating Roma 2-1 at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to move above their opponents into seventh place in Serie A.

Bosko Jankovic put the home side ahead against the run of play in the 39th minute and it took Roma over 40 minutes to finally make their apparent superiority count with Fabio Borini levelling.

However, as the Giallorossi searched for a deserved winner, they were caught out with an unwitting Juraj Kucka grabbing the winner for the home side in the 89th minute.

Roma looked buoyed by their recent upturn in form and attacked a Genoa side who disappointed with a 0-0 draw against Lecce in their last home match.

Simone Perrotta tested Sebastien Frey in the 20th minute with Erik Lamela sending the rebound wide.

Borini went even closer in the 24th minute with his diagonal shot beyond the reach of Frey, but also beyond the far post.

Fernando Gago had Roma's next chance two minutes later, but Frey made a fine reflex save to deny him and a dominant Giallorossi the lead.

The opening goal came in the 39th minute, but not at the end where it was expected as Jankovic placed his shot from 10 yards out beyond the reach of Stekelenburg to give the home side a shock lead.

Roma continued to attack in the second half and finally got a deserved equaliser in the 82nd minute.

Cesare Bovo tried to shepherd the ball out, but Marco Borriello hooked his foot around the Genoa defender to lift the ball across the goal to Borini, who had a simple task of scoring from point-blank range.

It was the least Roma deserved for their domination and they looked likely to go on and win the game, but Genoa had other plans.

A corner from the right was headed back towards goal by Alexander Merkel and it landed on the foot of Kucka, who without really knowing anything about it, saw the ball rebound off his boot inside the near post for the late winner.
