World Cup winner Simone Perrotta has announced his intention to slip into retirement at the end of his Roma contract.
The 35-year-old midfielder will see his current deal in the Italian capital expire on 30th June.
A man who helped Italy to global glory in 2006 is aware that no fresh terms will be agreed and he believes the time is right to hang up his boots.
Perrotta feels he could continue for another couple of years, but wants to bow out as a Roma player and is pleased with what he has achieved over the course of a distinguished career - with two Italian Cup triumphs added to his 48 international caps.
"I definitely won't stay on at Roma as a player," he told Teleradiostereo.
"I don't think I'll continue playing at all, in fact, as I'd prefer to end my career as an ex-Roma player rather than the ex of another club.
"I wanted to finish my playing days with this jersey and I feel it's the right thing to do.
"It is possible my story with Roma could continue in a different way. It is only right their project continues to move forward with the players they consider to be valid."
