Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has praised Jordan Henderson's attitude and believes the midfielder is improving tactically all the time.
Henderson has not started the last four Premier League games for the Reds, which has seen victories over Swansea, Wigan and Spurs followed by a 3-1 defeat at Southampton last time out.
But Rodgers knows if he needs to juggle his resources and bring the midfielder into his starting line-up, the 22-year-old will be ready to play his part.
Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo: "It's just the balance and it depends on the opponent.
"Jordan has been excellent and his attitude has been great. The team has been winning as well.
"But Jordan has been excellent, he's a good player, he's improving tactically all the time and I know if I need to call on him he will be ready."
The 21-year-old joins youngsters Adam Cummins, Zaine Francis-Angol, Stuart Carswell and Craig Moore in committing their futures to the club.
"I am delighted, it's always great to get that wee bit of security," McHugh said.
"I've worked hard at it, even though I've not started as many games as may have liked, and I hope the manager has recognized that.
"It's not always easy to come off the bench and have an impact but I've made a contribution; I look back at the Hibs game as certainly the high point of the season.
"The is to try and win a regular place in the starting eleven this season and beyond."
The Glasgow-born striker was handed his Motherwell debut by Mark McGhee aged just sixteen and has made 71 appearances for the club.
