Tiago granted clearance to play

Tiago was supposed to play for Portugal in the ongoing Athens Olympics. An injury kept the youngster from joining the squad for the competition and he has been training lightly with Chelsea in England. Chelsea had hoped to get permission to play Tiago in a reserve match Tuesday in order to help improve his fitness. They did not, however, get the clearance in time for the match. Tiago is now permitted to play in any competition now that he has been freed from international duty by the Portuguese FA. The 23-year-old Tiago followed coach Jose Mourinho from Portugal to Chelsea this offseason. He was a key cog during Benfica's Portuguese Cup triumph last season, helping his side deny Mourinho and Porto a second consecutive treble.
