Premier League 433 2160 Stories to follow in 2013 31500490 World in motion World+in+motion Premier League

A brand new year of soccer is upon us. This spring, the new champions of Europe will be crowned in the club game while here in the United States teams from around CONCACAF will vie for the Gold Cup. Leagues will be decided on every continent and Brazil officially kicks off the road to 2014 with the Confederations Cup. But there’s also a few offbeat things to keep an eye on as well, so what follows is an opinionated roundup of some of the stories to watch in the coming year, along with a few predictions about the winners this May:

- Special to FOXSports.com http://static.foxsports.com/content/fsc/img/2012/12/28/122812-SOCCER-STORIES-TO-WATCH-SS-G1_20121228154304234_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fsc/img/2012/12/28/122812-SOCCER-STORIES-TO-WATCH-SS-G1_20121228154304234_107_80.JPG
Premier League 433 2160 Stories to follow in 2013 31500489 Final predictions? Final+predictions%3F Premier League

Now, some winners: This May we see Manchester United taking the English title, Bayern collecting another Bundesliga scalp; Barcelona taking La Liga, Juventus holding firm in Italy and PSG getting it done in France. All fairly easy picks. Here’s the tough one: not one of those teams will win the Champions League.

Of the sixteen teams left in Europe, we’ll tip Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid as the teams to watch. Both those clubs have little hope of taking their league titles, giving them a lot of time to focus exclusively on the Champions League.

Premier League 433 2160 Stories to follow in 2013 31501426 Breaking the traditions? Breaking+the+traditions%3F Premier League

Now that the Premier League has cashed in around the world, will it get smart and play a few meaningful games outside of its borders? Uh, no, that would be too smart. The folks that run the Premier League continue to prize tradition over innovation. This is a mistake given that their newest fans increasingly live outside the British Isles. The Premier League is a global league. It should start acting like it in the ways that count.

The Scots have it worse: after doing the right thing and condemning Rangers to a steep drop, they now have to figure out a way to make their league relevant again. On tap is a shaken-up Scottish Premier League with two 12-team divisions. This makes sense -- but not everyone is on board. One of the biggest roadblocks happens to be the Scottish FA, which seems disinclined to consider any changes. Perhaps they too are clinging to the past, but the era when the Scots had the best league in Britain is forty years past.

Premier League 433 2160 Stories to follow in 2013 31501425 USA's domestic policy USA%27s+domestic+policy Premier League

The Gold Cup is meaningless this year, a run-out for a USA B team while the regular guys handle World Cup qualification. Pay attention anyway: the USA desperately needs some depth at every almost position. A backup goalkeeper would be useful, as well as a playmaker and a legit target man. Is this where you’ll find them? Jurgen Klinsmann sure hopes so.

Premier League 433 2160 Stories to follow in 2013 31500491 UEFA's ambitous plans UEFA%27s+ambitous+plans Premier League

UEFA is investigating the exciting possibility of combining the Europa League and the Champions League into a big-ticket, 64-team competition! No, no wait – step off that window ledge. It’s OK. I know other tournaments that have expanded into oblivion (cough, World Cup, cough) have suffered mightily.

But see this for what it really is: a stealthy attempt to form a European Super League. A sixty-four team category killer sucking away all the top teams from the best leagues which would be bereft of seat-filling popular teams, with the remainder noodling around for already diminished silver cups. UEFA has learned well from the NFL. Now you can get back on that window ledge.

Luiz Felipe Scolari is back and the World Cup is coming! Olympics too!

Brazil's domestic league is great! So is anyone else worried about the nation’s ability to host big events in light of the troubles flaring up recently at their soccer games? Only time will tell if Brazil can hold up in time for their future events.

We’ll tell you to pay attention to this dry run for the 2014 World Cup closer to the date, despite the fact that the USA, um, aren’t in this tournament. Keep a close eye on all the problems already rearing up (corruption, violence, fan issues) and see how well Brazil handles them. But for right now, think about Tahiti. Yes, Tahiti.

This is one of the tiniest teams to ever make the finals of an international tournament, and the Oceanic Cup champs earned the right to trot out this summer with the likes of Mexico, Brazil and Spain. Tahiti will probably get whipped, but admit it: you’re going to root for them too.

Premier League 433 2160 Stories to follow in 2013 31501424 Last chance? Last+chance%3F Premier League

Africa's prestigous tournament begins in just over two weeks in South Africa. FOX Soccer.com will have extensive coverage on the ground, but from where I sit the big story is Cote D’Ivoire. This is the last chance for that nation’s golden generation – and a chance that they would not even get had CAF not switched the tournament to this off-year cycle. Cote D’Ivoire lost last year to Zambia in one of our favorite moments of that year; this is now a chance for Didier Drogba to punch the ticket for his country and collect Africa’s biggest prize.
