Premier League 433 8 Grading England: Barclays Premier League Midseason Marks 30518269 Mid-term grades Mid-term+grades Premier League

When the whistle blew on Sunderland's up-set victory over Manchester City, the 2011-12 Barclays Premier League reached its half-way mark, with 18 of the league's 20 teams having played their 19th match (Tottenham and Everton have one to make up). It's a great time to take inventory of each club's season and break out the report card: How does each club grade out through half of the season?

Stu Forster - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fsc/img/2012/01/01/136313699_20120101163513366_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fsc/img/2012/01/01/136313699_20120101163513366_107_80.JPG
Premier League 433 8 Grading England: Barclays Premier League Midseason Marks 30518273 How do you grade a team? How+do+you+grade+a+team%3F Premier League

Why assign grades to teams when we have standings?

Because these grades can provide a view that goes beyond a club's place in the table. Each organization enters the season with different expectations. These grades attempt to judge clubs against those goals.

If a club has no hope of contending for Europe and finds itself in sixth at the half-way mark, that should be seen as a very successful run. Conversely, if a team was expected to be a title contender and has fallen flat, it's hard to give that squad a passing grade.

With that established, on to the grades.

Grade: B+

When Arsenal lost Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri at the onset of the season, expectations fell through the floor. Many wondered if Arsenal would get past Udinese in their Champions League playoff. Most expected them to have trouble maintaining their top four perch.

Sitting fourth in league, Arsenal has recovered from their loses, thanks in large part to the play of Robin van Persie. The Gunners have also gotten strong seasons from Wojciech Szczesny, Alex Song, Mikel Arteta and Gervinho, all reasons why the Gunners were able to finish first in their Champions League group.

Grade: C+

The results have been acceptable under Alex McLeish, but the soccer has been terrible, leaving Villa fans numb after 19 matches. The team's won only five matches, but thanks to eight draws (tied for tops in the league), Villa sit solidly mid-table. While their win at Stamford Bridge should give supporters hope, it probably won't. Would you have a positive outlook in the face of 19 more games of Alex McLeish football?

Villa's likely to stay in mid-table throughout the year, but at some point Randy Lerner need to make a more definitive decision about the direction of the club. Under Martin O'Neill, Villans were given a team that could threaten the big boys, even if they habitually faded in March. Just because O'Neill is gone doesn't mean the expectations went with him.

Premier League 433 8 Grading England: Barclays Premier League Midseason Marks 30519035 Blackburn Rovers Blackburn+Rovers Premier League

Grade: F

It speaks to how poor Blackburn's season's been that Rovers can win at Old Trafford and still get an F, but this is a club that's not only used to its Premier League place but have an ownership group that was talking big upon buying the club. Suffice to say Ronaldinho and David Beckham aren't coming to Lancashire anytime soon.

Lack of quality in the midfield has left a physical but slow defense exposed. Blackburn's 41 goals allowed are the second-highest total in the league. If it wasn't for Yakubu coming out of nowhere to score 12 goals, Blackburn's place in the Championship would already be booked.

Not only has Bolton been unexpected bad, there don't appear to be any solutions. Johan Elmander and Daniel Sturridge are gone. Lee Chung-yong's out long-term. Gary Cahill's about to move to Chelsea, and while Stuart Holden could come back soon, it's been a long time since he played regularly.

The solutions Owen Coyle has tried haven't worked. Chris Eagles? Tuncay? David N'gog? This is not a master plan.
Bolton's become so bad so quickly, everybody seems shell-shocked.

Premier League 433 8 Grading England: Barclays Premier League Midseason Marks 30516610 Chelsea Chelsea Premier League

Grade: C-

Chelsea's fans certainly didn't expect to be fifth entering 2012, levels at which the Blues have not sat since Luiz Felipe Scolari ran the club. Although Chelsea ended up winning their Champions League group, they entered that competition's sixth match day staring elimination in the face. After 19 league matches, the new coach has been forced to concede title aspirations are fantasies.

The Blues are clearly in transition, but looking at some of their recent spending, it's clear the club had much bigger aspirations than this. In the past year, the team's paid for Fernando Torres, David Luiz, Raul Meireles, Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku and their coach, Andre Villas-Boas.

In all, the six purchases cost Chelsea just short of $205 million. For a team giving that kind of outlay, fifth place is not enough.

Premier League 433 8 Grading England: Barclays Premier League Midseason Marks 30516626 Everton Everton Premier League

Grade: B

Notoriously slow starters, Everton's higher in the league standings than we usually find them at the end of December, though as has become custom, the Toffees' problem has been in their striker force. Young Greek import Apostolos Vellios's three goals are tied for the team lead and are tops amongst strikers, with Tim Cahill yet to put his name on the scoresheet.

Without reliable goal scoring options, David Moyes has had to cobble together the contributions of Vellios, Leighton Baines, and Leon Osman, the only players who've scored more than twice.
Everton should get somewhat of a pass after losing Mikel Arteta on the last day of the summer transfer window. It's understandable that the club didn't have time to replace their playmaker. If Moyes can address that problem and find a striker who can provide some consistency, Everton will be able to look at 2011-12 as a successful season.

The Cottagers finished top half under Mark Hughes, and in bringing in Martin Jol, they were expected to push on. Those expectations were augmented by two quality buys: John Arne Riise and Bryan Ruiz.

Unfortunately for the Craven Cottage faithful, Fulham appears to have taken a step back. The Cottager have only four wins and sit in 14th. The team lacks punch in central midfield and, remarkable, is still depending on a limited Danny Murphy for distribution out of midfield. Jol has clashed with star striker Bobby Zamora, the exchange of Philippe Senderos for Aaron Hughes has yet to yield results, while there are further rumblings from the locker room.
Jol's return to London is off to a very rocky start.

At the beginning of the season, John W. Henry laid out the expectations: Top four. He didn't authorize all that spending for nothing. Over the course of 2011, Liverpool spent just over $173 million in transfer fees on seven players.

For Liverpool, though, reclaiming Champions League is a process. Few would have expected them to jump out of the gates and reclaim their place in England's hierarchy. That they're two points back of Arsenal is a mild success, given injury concerns with Steven Gerrard (just returning) and Lucas Leiva (out for the rest of the season).

Still, with expectations so explicitly defined by the owner, we know Liverpool's progress will have to continue.

Premier League 433 8 Grading England: Barclays Premier League Midseason Marks 30511996 Manchester City Manchester+City Premier League

Grade: A

Manchester City was expected to stay in the title race this season, but through the campaign's first half, they've defined it. On pace for 90 points and 106 goals, Manchester City has been the strongest team in the league, even if a late December slump has allowed their crosstown rivals to pull even on points as the calendar has turned.

The only down part of City's first half has been Champions League, where the Citizens were seen out of the competition after finishing third in their group. Given it was Manchester City's first foray into Europe's marque competition, the performance isn't incredibly disappointing, while a semifinal appearance in the Carling Cup gives England's new power a crack at a different trophy.

It's difficult to give a low grade to a club that's tied on points at the top of the league, though Manchester United has looked very shaky. Go beyond the Premier League and you see that uncertainty play out.

Manchester United finished third in one of Champions League's weakest group, earning them a ticket to Europa League (one which they don't seem to want). In the Carling Cup, the Red Devils were eliminated by second division Crystal Palace. Even in league, United suffered through the indignity of losing 6-1 to rival Manchester City.

Their days hanging around the league's elite seem to be over, a bad part of form knocking the Magpies down to seventh. This appears to be their level, putting them right on the edge of Europa League qualification.

There's reason to think Newcastle can stabilize at this level. Tim Krul has emerged as one of the league's better goalkeepers. Led by Fabricio Coloccini, the defense has the depth to withstand the Steven Taylor loss. Yohan Cabaye has been a great success in midfield, and Demba Ba continues to establish himself in his second season in England.

Eleventh come January is more than the Canaries could have asked for, with their 28 goals scored particularly impressive. Paul Lambert can look to the 34 goals allowed and hope that a little tightening up at the back can ensure the club's Premier League survival.

Steve Morison and Grant Holt have been unexpectedly prolific in attack, combining for 13 goals. Even if they slip, Lambert can hope Simeon Jackson and James Vaughan can improve on their two goals.

Already with 22 points in a year where safety looks to come a few steps short of the magical 40-mark, Norwich's first half has been successful by any reasonable measure.

For a newly promoted team, staying up is the number one priority. In that light, QPR gets a passing grade. In light of the team's summer signings, however, QPR has disappointed, only two points above the drop at the midway mark.

While you don't expect players like Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Jay Bothroyd, D.J. Campbell, Luke Young, Armand Traore and Danny Gabbidon to send a team flying up the table, it's an injection of talent many in the Premier League would love to have.

That QPR has been unable to build on that boost leaves plenty of questions entering 2012.

Eighth place represents continued progress for the Potters, who have incrementally climbed up the league since being promoted three seasons ago. Their FA Cup final appearance got them into Europa after last season.

They season, they could qualify with their league finish.

Their league position may flatter their actual quality, however. Through 19 matches, Stoke's scored only 20 goals while allowing 30, a goal difference more akin to a relegation battler than a Europe contender.

It's hard to grade a club that's changed managers, particularly when the two bosses have had such divergent results. Under Steve Bruce, Sunderland was an uninspired club that had drifted to the edge of relegation one season after spending most of the season in the top half. In only five games under Martin O'Neill, Sunderland has already eclipsed their Bruce in total while becoming only the second team this season to defeat Manchester City.

Under O'Neill, Sunderland has been a B+ or an A. Under Bruce, the team may have been an F. Consider 14 of their games were played under Bruce and you get the barely passing grade.

Swans' long-awaited return to the first division sees the Welsh club out of the drop come January, hence the good grade. Unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers' team, the underlying indicators aren't good.

Swansea's attack has been impotent, scoring 18 goals (only Wigan's scored fewer). Their 23 goals allowed are a positive, but it's a number built on unexpectedly strong play from Michel Vorm - play it may not be fair to expect from the Dutch `keeper in 2012.

It's a story that's reminiscent of last year with Blackpool. Stylist play leads to surprising early results but can't stave off relegation as the club's second turn through the league sees opposition better prepared to beat a `keeper who can no longer carry his squad.

At the beginning of the season, Spurs were hoping to get back into Champions League, but with the amount of money Liverpool spend over the summer, competing for Champions League would have been considered a more realistic goal. Now, Spurs find themselves safely in third place and, if they convert in their match in hand against Everton, will be closer to a title race than a fight for Champions League.

There have been only two disappointments in Spurs' season. First, the team stumbled out of the gate, losing badly to both Manchester clubs. In hindsight, it seems Tottenham were unduly affected by the Luka Modrica-to-Chelsea saga. Secondly, Spurs gave a half-hearted effort in Europa League.

The Baggies have fully transitioned from the flowing side that was promoted under Roberto di Matteo to a group of pragmatic opportunists that embody the approach of Roy Hodgson. The results almost never look good, but look at where they are: Solidly mid-table, having taken seven points from their last four matches.

Goal scoring has been a big problem, particularly with Peter Odemwingie not playing as large a role as he did under Di Matteo, though the potential is there. Shane Long has five goals in his first half-season with WBA, while Odemwingie still had four goals despite starting only 10 of 19 matches.

We've seen this act from Roberto Martinez before. Wigan's looked terrible at the beginning of the last couple of seasons, but come April and May, the former Latics midfielder has figured out a way to keep his side in the Premier League. After a break of a couple of months, he comes back to do the same thing all over again: Spend the first six months of the season figuring out a recipe; spend the rest of the season applying it.

This year feels the same, but that doesn't overshadow the fact Wigan's been pretty bad so far this season.

Wolves' only goal each year is survival, so sitting 16th in January should be considered a success, particularly in light of the 20th-place standing this time last year. There was, however, reason to expect more from Wolves this year, particularly with the acquisition of defender Roger Johnson from Birmingham City. Despite the upgrade, Wolves have still allowed 34 goals.

Mick McCarthy's side's been able to keep up thanks to a glut of timely goals from Steven Fletcher, who has scored eight times in his second season at the Molineux. Stephen Hunt has also put in a strong season, but Wolves need a little more from Matt Jarvis and Kevin Doyle, particularly given the health concerns surrounding Jamie O'Hara.
