Defending MLS Cup champions Los Angeles Galaxy reached a multi-year deal to make Omar Gonzalez their third Designated Player on Thursday.

Gonzalez joins Landon Donovan and club captain Robbie Keane, as the club's third Designated Player. The defender took to Twitter to express his excitment and appreciation:

"To be the first Galaxy and US defender to be named as a Designated Player is a great honor for me," said Gonzalez. "The Galaxy are the premier club in MLS and I'm looking forward to growing as a professional in L.A. while working towards winning a third consecutive MLS Cup."

The 24-year-old United States international has made 119 appearances since joining the Los Angeles club in 2009, scoring six goals and adding five assists in that span. Gonzalez earned 2011 MLS Defender of the Year and 2012 MLS Cup MVP honors and is a mainstay in Jurgen Klinsmann's United States men's national team.

MLS POWER RANKINGS

MLS's newest superstar draws all the attention, and with good reason.

“We are thrilled that Omar has chosen to remain with the Galaxy and Major League Soccer for years to come,” said Dan Beckerman, AEG's CEO. “Omar’s commitment is a clear indication of our continued appeal as a destination for top soccer talent.”

The former Maryland Terrapins standout has also helped the LA Galaxy reach the MLS Cup in three of the past four season. Galaxy manager Bruce Arena praised the deal to retain the defender's services.

"We are pleased that Omar will remain with the Galaxy,” said Arena. “In the past five years, he has arguably developed in to the top defender in MLS. I believe he can continue to grow as a player and leader of our team.”

Per club and MLS policy, details of the contract were not disclosed.
