Former Rutgers University Athletics Director Tim Pernetti is set to join up with a New York-based Major League Soccer expansion team, according to a USA Today report.

Building up talent is simply asking for trouble. Just ask these guys.

Pernetti, who resigned from the position in April of this year in a cloud of controversy, is reportedly set to join a new MLS side - believed to be New York City Football Club - in an executive role.

New Jersey native Pernetti resigned from his position at Rutgers in April following allegations made against former coach Mike Rice. Rice was reported to have subjected his players to physical and verbal abuse.

The deal would represent another coup for NYC Football Club if the reports are true. The new franchise was announced in May as a joint venture between Premier League side Manchester City and the New York Yankees baseball team.

The franchise quickly set about making the best of its links, bringing in former Manchester City midfielder and American soccer legend Claudio Reyna as Director of Football Operations.

According to the report, the deal is set to be announced next week.
