The Columbus Crew have hired former United States defender Gregg Berhalter as their seventh head coach.

Berhalter takes the place of interim coach Brian Bliss, who took over during the recently completed season for the fired Robert Warzycha, who led the team the past five years.

Berhalter became the first American to manage a European professional team when he was hired by Swedish club Hammarby.

He had an 18-year run as a player, including stays in the Netherlands, England and Germany.

Berhalter will also oversee all player personnel decisions with the Crew.
