MLS 195 43 MLS Power Rankings: Week Five 31670997 Cutting down the schedule Cutting+down+the+schedule MLS

MLS is operating with a reduced schedule this weekend. Why? The league wanted to provide every possible aid to LA Galaxy and Seattle as those two clubs continued their run in the CONCACAF Champions League. Once both teams secured a place in the semifinals, league officials rescheduled the games on the docket for this weekend in order to give both squads plenty of time to prepare for their second legs in Mexico next week. It might mean fewer games to watch in the short-term, but the league will hope that this temporary concession leads to greater success on the continental stage.

Honorable mention:

11. Philadelphia Union
12. D.C United
13. New York Red Bulls
14. Toronto FC
15. Seattle Sounders
16. New England Revolution
17. Portland Timbers
18. Colorado Rapids
19. Chicago Fire

The lofty dreams of an unblemished season came to an inevitable and unceremonious end at Sporting Park on Saturday. Sporting offered up a template for other teams to use – grab an early goal and stop the Impact from playing for the counter so earnestly – as they attempt to replicate the 2-0 victory in the coming weeks.

Next on the docket: Impact boss Marco Schällibaum will spend this weekend trying to devise a secondary plan before his side opens its slate at Stade Saputo against Columbus on April 13.

International aspirations trump domestic concerns for the Galaxy at this stage, though the results on the field do not show it. Jose Villarreal grabbed the MLS Cup holders a deserved share of the points in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Toronto FC to maintain the momentum required to tackle Mexican side CF Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals.

Next on the docket: Bruce Arena's side will rest up this weekend before heading to Estadio Tecnológico for the decisive second leg on Wednesday.

Yet another side left BBVA Compass Stadium without securing a victory on Saturday. San Jose at least joined a rather long list of defeated sides: the Dynamo hasn't lost a competitive game in the building since it opened and hasn't lost anywhere in Houston in the past 34 matches. One more home result against Chicago on April 14 would hand the Dynamo the longest streak in MLS history.

Next on the docket: Houston must take care of a trip to Portland on Saturday before attempting to extend its unbeaten home run against the Fire. -

Leave it to David Ferreira to continue New England Revolution’s torrid start to the season. The former MLS MVP carved out a yard of space on the edge of the penalty area and provided pinpoint service for Blas Perez's winner at New England on Saturday. Ferreira has struggled with injury concerns over the past couple of seasons, but he retains the class necessary to determine games when fit.

Next on the docket: Ferreira will strive to conjure up similar magic ahead of Saturday's match at Toronto FC.

Offseason arrival, Benny Feilhaber revealed his considerable quality on the ball in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Montreal at Sporting Park. The U.S. international midfielder played a part in both goals for Sporting and submitted his best performance for the club to date. His influence supplied the extra bit of quality required to ease the frustrations of the past few weeks.

Next on the docket: Sporting manager – and recent U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame inductee – Peter Vermes will expect Feilhaber to continue his good run of form against D.C. United on Friday.

It took four matches, but RSL finally celebrated a goal scored by someone other than Álvaro Saborío. Robbie Findley and Luis Gil picked up the slack from the injured Saborío – omitted due to a knee injury picked up on international duty with Costa Rica – to collect a 2-1 victory over Seattle on Saturday.

Next on the docket: Other players – including the returning Javier Morales – will hope to contribute in front of goal when RSL treks to Vancouver to face the Whitecaps on April 13.

Old friends Dominic Kinnear and Frank Yallop shared the touchline at BBVA Compass Stadium. However the Earthquakes coach didn't enjoy the reunion very much as the Dynamo notched a 2-0 win in Houston on Saturday. One silver lining emerged for Yallop though: Alan Gordon appeared for the first time this season after recovering from offseason surgery on his left foot.

Next on the docket: Gordon will hope a few of his injured teammates can join him on the field when Vancouver arrives on Saturday.

Veteran boss José Luis Sánchez Solá continues to look like a genius. His ragtag bunch of players – a collecting of castoffs, established professionals and ill-fitting pieces from north and south of the border – snagged yet another victory against Vancouver on Saturday. The man they call El Chelis deserves most of the credit for molding a cohesive and entertaining unit out of a squad universally expected to land at the bottom of the Western Conference table.

Next on the docket: Chivas USA will take a weekend off from earning plaudits before hosting Colorado on April 13.

Talent isn't a concern for the Whitecaps and their wasteful work in the final third. The players involved in the final third – including Scotland international Kenny Miller and young Jamaican striker Darren Mattocks – possess the tools to produce goals. They just need to display more rhythm and more selflessness than they did in the 2-1 defeat at Chivas USA on Saturday in order to procure.

Next on the docket: The search for consistency in the final third continues when the Whitecaps travel to San Jose on Saturday.

An early bye week allowed the Crew to plot carefully last weekend before embarking upon a run of five consecutive matches against Eastern Conference opponents. Robert Warzycha's side tends to fall around the playoff cutline, but a solid run of results here could offer a bit more cushion in the Crew's bid to return to the postseason after a one-year absence.

Next on the docket: The pursuit of that objective continues when Philadelphia visits Crew Stadium on Saturday.
