MLS 195 2341 MLS Power Rankings - Week 28 31886641 Walking on egg shells Walking+on+egg+shells MLS

MLS coaches may earn some notoriety for their sartorial choices, but their sideline demeanor isn't winning much favor with the men in the middle. Three managers -- D.C. United's Ben Olsen and Montréal's Marco Schällibaum at Stade Saputo, Chicago's Frank Klopas at Gillette Stadium -- all earned their marching orders at some point this weekend. Consider their frustrations over relatively trifling matters -- technical areas in Quebec, time wasting in Massachusetts -- as a symbol of the increasing tensions around the league. For now, here at this week's MLS Power Rankings:

Honorable mention

11. Seattle Sounders
12. New England Revolution
13. Columbus Crew
14. Chicago Fire
15. San Jose Earthquakes
16. FC Dallas
17. Toronto FC
18. D.C. United
19. Chivas USA

MLS 195 2341 MLS Power Rankings - Week 28 31886642 Sporting KC Sporting+KC MLS

The trip to Santa Clara on Sunday always presented a rather awkward assignment. Sporting permitted San Jose to dictate the ragged terms of the proceedings and succumbed to a well-taken Chris Wondolowski header in the second half. It proved perhaps more than the game deserved, but Sporting departed northern California without a result nonetheless.

The trip to Carson did not quite proceed according to plan. LA Galaxy claimed a 4-2 victory with a compelling display of its might. RSL coach Jason Kreis (pictured) said he felt like his players had more to give in the wake of the defeat. And Kreis – now mired in the midst of contractual negotiations with the club – will not stand for it with his side mired in the thick of the Supporters' Shield chase.

Next on the docket: RSL will try to muster a response at Portland on Wednesday.

The return of Tim Cahill and Thierry Henry (pictured) should have spurred the Red Bulls to victory over Philadelphia. It didn't happen. New York settled for a mere point against a Union side without a previous result at Red Bull Arena.

Next on the docket: Cahill and Henry will hope to set things right at Chivas USA on Sunday.

MLS 195 2341 MLS Power Rankings - Week 28 31886640 Portland Timbers Portland+Timbers MLS

Caleb Porter's side needed to collect all three points after snatching just a pair of draws over the past three matches. Diego Valeri (pictured) prompted both Timbers goals inside the opening 33 minutes to ensure the home side secured the desired result against FC Dallas on Saturday. The 2-1 victory provides the Timbers with the necessary platform to continue its ascent toward the top of the Western Conference.

Next on the docket: Portland hosts Real Salt Lake on Wednesday and then treks to Seattle to play the Sounders at a sold-out CenturyLink Field on Sunday. No pressure, right?

Omar Gonzalez (pictured) sure knows how to mark an occasion. The U.S. international defender celebrated his Designated Player deal with a goal and a sturdy overall performance in the Galaxy's 4-2 victory over Real Salt Lake. He must produce more of the same over the next few years to justify his reported seven-figure salary over the next few years.

Next on the docket: Gonzalez and his teammates host Costa Rican side Cartaginés in CONCACAF Champions League play on Tuesday before traveling to Vancouver on Saturday.

MLS 195 2341 MLS Power Rankings - Week 28 31887606 Colorado Rapids Colorado+Rapids MLS

Is it time to believe in the Rapids? Colorado extended its unbeaten run to nine matches (and set a new club record in the process) with a 2-0 victory over fellow playoff chasers Vancouver on Saturday. The triumph – combined with the boost created by recent arrivals Vicente Sánchez and Gabriel Torres (pictured) – offers just the latest sign that the expected second-half fade may not materialize.

Next on the docket: The in-form side will rest next weekend before heading to Kansas City to face Sporting on Aug. 31.

Colorado exacerbated the recent wobbles within the Whitecaps camp with a 2-0 victory in Commerce City, Colo. Vancouver can at least take some solace in Kenny Miller's (pictured) midweek goal against England, right?

MLS 195 2341 MLS Power Rankings - Week 28 31887607 Houston Dynamo Houston+Dynamo MLS

Most of the attention in the buildup to Seattle's visit to BBVA Compass Stadium fell squarely on Clint Dempsey. Houston – and Giles Barnes (pictured), in particular – ensured those discussions ended by sweeping aside the Sounders on Saturday. The 3-1 victory offered a reminder that Dempsey won't cure Seattle's defensive ills and the Dynamo will not slink out of the playoffs without a fight.

Next on the docket: Dominic Kinnear will pile his squad onto a plane to Trinidad to face W Connection in a CONCACAF Champions League match on Tuesday (8:00p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1) before Saturday's trip to Montréal.

MLS 195 2341 MLS Power Rankings - Week 28 31884902 Philadelphia Union Philadelphia+Union MLS

The long, painful procession of trips to Harrison ended on Saturday. Philly managed to procure its first point at Red Bull Arena with a 0-0 draw against the Red Bulls. It may not stand out as an aesthetic triumph, but the draw does at least provide the Union with a platform to pursue more ambitious results upon their inevitable return to Jersey.

Next on the docket: Philly glides up I-95 for a date with New England on Sunday.

MLS 195 2341 MLS Power Rankings - Week 28 31884900 Montreal Impact Montreal+Impact MLS

The coaching kerfuffle rather distracted from the Impact's rather uncertain approach to this match. Marco Di Vaio (pictured) finally secured the points with his second goal seven minutes from time, but the home side really should have dispatched United well before that juncture. Montréal must improve on the whole to ensure it wages the proper fight on two fronts over the next month or two.

Next on the docket: Montréal travels to Guatemala City for a CONCACAF Champions League match against Heredia on Wednesday before returning home to face Houston on Saturday.
