Chivas pips Santos to playoff spot

Morelia, Cruz Azul, Monterrey and Chivas all advanced to the Mexican Apertura football championship quarterfinals after the weekend's final round of the regular season matches.

Toluca finished the season in first place after its 2-0 victory over San Luis on Saturday and will play Chivas in the quarterfinals. Runner-up Tijuana faces Monterrey, Leon hosts Cruz Azul and America plays Morelia.
The quarterfinals first-leg matches are scheduled to be played on Wednesday and Thursday, with the return legs next Saturday and Sunday.
Last season's Clausura champion, Santos Laguna, failed to make the playoffs after falling 2-0 to Morelia on Friday, with Miguel Sabah scoring in each half.
Jaguares and Tigres also had the chance to make the playoffs, but neither managed to win their final matches.
Jaguares lost 2-1 to the eliminated Pachuca on Saturday after Emilio Garcia netted the winner two minutes from time.
Tigres could only draw 1-1 with America on Saturday, with Juninho's 39th minute goal for Tigres canceled out by Paul Aguilar's 67th minute strike.
Those results left the door open for Monterrey, which drew 1-1 with Cruz Azul on Saturday and watched other results fall its way.
Christian Gimenez put Cruz Azul up in the 23rd minute, before Aldo de Nigris equalized in the 44th. The draw also guaranteed Cruz Azul's place in the playoffs.
Chivas only needed to avoid a heavy defeat Sunday against already-qualified Tijuana and managed to do so, despite a 2-0 loss.
Alfredo Moreno gave Tijuana after just 15 seconds and Duvier Riascos extended it in the 3rd minute, capitalizing on a defensive error.
Toluca, Tijuana and Leon also secured places in next year*s Copa Libertadores competition by finishing in the top three positions of the league.
In other results this weekend, Queretaro overcame Puebla 1-0 to record its first win of the season, Leon defeated Atlas 3-1, and Pumas won 3-2 against Atlante
