Mexico Primera Division 2819 43 Mexican Soccer 2013 - Year in Review 31985349 Mexico's year in review Mexico%27s+year+in+review Mexico Primera Division

Controversy, failure and tumult ravaged the Mexican national team turning what might have been a year of triumph into a chastening experience indeed. El Tri lurched through qualifying, without finding its form. The jagged path through the Hexagonal claimed three separate managers and forced this proud nation into a humbling playoff against New Zealand to secure its World Cup place at the last possible instant.

But for all of Mexico’s struggles, the fact is that El Tri are in the 2014 World Cup. The pain yielded to the promise of the future by the end of December. Mexico have a new manager in place and a new philosophy on tap. Brazil beckons.

Herrera earned the chance to lead El Tri to Brazil by navigating through the World Cup playoff. He faces a significant task to mold this side into an outfit capable of securing yet another berth in the round of 16, but his arrival represents an infusion of certainty and hope to close out an otherwise disappointing and frustrating year for the national team.

Club America boss Miguel Herrera replaced Vucetich after the defeat in Costa Rica and took charge on an interim basis for the two-legged tie against the All Whites. Herrera imported 10 of his own players and relied on the core developed in Liga MX to brush aside the OFC representatives. Oribe Peralta scored twice in the first leg to essentially guarantee Mexico's place in Brazil with a 5-1 triumph at the Azteca. The academic 4-2 victory in Wellington a week later applied a gloss reflective of the gulf between the sides.

Victor Manuel Vucetich took charge after de la Torre exited and assistant Luis Fernando Tena oversaw the defeat in Columbus. Vucetich opened his reign with a nervy 2-1 victory over Panama at the Azteca. Raúl Jiménez's wonderful bicycle kick captured headlines around the world without solving the issues at home. Costa Rica carried Mexico to the precipice of World Cup failure four days later with a 2-0 victory, but the Americans' 3-2 triumph in Panama City salvaged a playoff berth at the Canaleros' expense.

Oribe Peralta finally broke Mexico's scoreless streak at the Azteca by pouncing after six minutes. The home side failed to build upon its early goal and paid the consequences when Jerry Bengtson and Carlo Costly struck in the second half. This famous 2-1 defeat finally prompted the FMF to terminate de la Torre's employment – but it proved too late to help Mexico secure a result in Columbus four days later.

Panama entered CONCACAF's glittering showcase without a win against El Tri. It advanced all the way to the final by dispatching Mexico twice: a 2-1 victory in Los Angeles to open the competition and a 2-1 win in Arlington, Tex. two weeks later to send de la Torre's makeshift side out of the tournament at the semifinal stage. How de la Torre quite managed to survive after this debacle remains uncertain.

The fears about Mexico continued after consecutive defeats to Italy and Brazil in the Confederations Cup. Neymar's stunning goal inside the first 10 minutes separated the sides until Jô grabbed the second in second-half stoppage time. Not even a victory over Japan in the final match could add much hope.

It took four tries – about four longer than anyone might have expected – for Mexico to register its first win in the Hexagonal. Aldo de Nigris scored three minutes into the second half to give de la Torre's side a precious 1-0 victory in Kingston, and apparently slide the qualification campaign back on track. Unfortunately, a pair of scoreless draws in Panama City and against Costa Rica at the Azteca (the third in succession) followed. De la Torre's future was now in question heading into the Confederations Cup.

The modest optimism in the wake of a 2-2 draw in Honduras four days earlier diminished after the Americans replicated the Jamaicans' feat. A second scoreless draw in succession left El Tri to lament its slipping status in relation to its biggest rivals and wonder whether this dip in home form constituted a blip or a serious concern. Unfortunately for El Tri, it was the latter.

Mexico meandered through preparations for the start of the Hexagonal. Jamaica – generally regarded as the worst team in the section, a point vindicated by the final table – provided an opportunity for Mexico ease into the 10-match gauntlet. Instead, the game supplied a rather harrowing glimpse into the future under José Manuel de la Torre: a dearth of incisiveness frustrated Mexico inside the attacking half and left the opposition to counter profitably. The crowd expressed its displeasure at the final whistle, but the result – particularly with Jamaica's wastefulness in this 0-0 draw – could have turned out much, much worse.
