The victory over the five-time Libertadores champions was the second in as many games for Santos Laguna.

After a goalless first half, Jonathan Lacerda headed a Carlos Darwin Quintero cross home in the 53rd minute and, seconds before the final whistle, Jose Abella converted from a counter-attack to confirm the victory.

"I am very happy because these three points are very important to us," Lacerda told

"Our forwards made a big effort. They worked a lot and helped the defenders mark too."

Deportivo Anzoategui of Venezuela and Argentina's Arsenal Sarandi are the other clubs in the group.

Meanwhile, in Ecuador, hosts Independiente del Valle played out a 2-2 draw with Union Espanola of Chile in Group Two.

Competition debutants Independiente took the lead through a 30th-minute penalty from Junior Sornoza, but Sebastian Jaime equalised in the 53rd minute following some great individual play by Cristian Chavez.

Only four minutes later Fernando Guerrero put the hosts ahead again with a left-footed shot but Chavez soon levelled the tie to secure a share of the points.

Union Espanola tried to net the winning goal but their task became more difficult from the 74th minute, when striker Gustavo Canales was shown a red card.

It was the first game for both teams in the group they share with Botafogo of Brazil and the reigning Argentinian champions San Lorenzo.
