Maxi Rodriguez and Ignacio Scocco helped Newell's Old Boys defeat Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro 2-0 in their Copa Libertadores semifinal first leg match on Wednesday.

After a goaless but hard-fought first half, the Argentine club broke deadlock just past the hour-mark thanks to Rodriguez's header. The former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid midfielder would later come close to adding a second goal but was denied by Mineiro goalkeeper Victor.

Later in the 81st minute, Scocco would add his side's second goal with a splendid free kick to give Newell's much-needed breathing space heading to their second leg encounter next week.

Gerardo Martino's men will travel to Lourdes for the second leg on July 10.
