Ten-man Getafe moved six places up the Primera Division table with a morale-boosting victory over Atletico Madrid.

They closed to within three points of their opponents with goals from Abdelaziz Barrada, Michel and a penalty from Gimenez Diego Castro.

Getafe, who had started the game bottom of the table, also had defender Alberto Lopo sent off after less than half an hour and were twice pegged back by goals from Radamel Falcao, with a penalty, and Alvaro Dominguez's deflected strike.

The visitors had the first effort on target when Ribas Diego's free-kick from the right was headed goalward by Diego Godin but Getafe goalkeeper Miguel Moya punched clear.

With 15 minutes gone Diego cut in from the left and fired right-footed from the edge of the area and Moya had to turn the ball round the post for a corner.

Barrada lined up a free-kick but cleared both the defensive wall and the bar.

Adrian Lopez then found himself in space in the Getafe box as he chased a through-ball but he was denied by a well-timed tackle by Lopo.

Lopo had the chance to open the scoring with a close-range effort from six yards at a corner but Alvaro Dominguez was on hand to block his effort.

Getafe were reduced to 10 men when centre-back Lopo brought down Diego as they both contested for the ball in the area.

With just under half an hour gone Falcao slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal from the penalty spot as Moya went the wrong way.

Getafe were level five minutes before the break when Barrada was given another chance with a free-kick, his effort flicking off the top of one of the players in the wall and past the diving Thibaut Courtois.

Getafe went ahead three minutes into the second half when midfielder Michel got his head to the ball from a free-kick by Barrada wide on the left and flicked it across goal and into the far corner.

Falcao looked set to score his second just after the hour when he chased a through-ball but Moya rushed out of his area and dived full stretch to head the ball clear.

Getafe went close with 15 minutes to go as Barrada nodded just wide after twice being involved in a breakaway move.

Barrada fed Michel and his pass wide on the left found Diego Castro, whose cross into the area was nodded just wide by Barrada.

Atletico drew level with 10 minutes left thanks to a huge slice of luck.

A left-footed shot from distance by Dominguez struck a Getafe defender on the edge of the area and the ball looped into the net with a stranded Moya sinking to his knees as it spun into the net.

But Getafe were given the chance to take the lead once more when Diego Castro sent in a weak shot from close range after a pass from Miku.

Diego Castro had already got the shot away when a sliding tackle from Arda Turan caught the player and the referee awarded a penalty. The forward waited for Courtois to commit himself to his right and slotted the ball low into the opposite corner to put the home side ahead once more with seven minutes remaining.

Barrada almost added a fourth when his shot was deflected wide off the back of Dominguez.

Eduardo Salvio flicked the ball into the Getafe box but Falcao headed wide of the target and the home side held on for an important win.
