After coach Luis Garcia told his players they needed to win all their remaining games to have a hope of salvaging their European dreams after a run of three defeats in four, his side fell at the first hurdle against a Racing side who managed to take a point despite missing a first-half penalty.

Papakouli Diop squandered that chance in the 26th minute, but did find the net to level the match five minutes after Nicolas Fedor had put Getafe ahead from the penalty spot just before the hour mark.

Getafe kicked off four points but six places off sixth-placed Atletico Madrid in the congested battle for a continental place, but if they meant to play like a side determined to make up lost ground it barely showed.

Diego Castro and Javi Casquero both sent shots wide but otherwise the first serious chance on goal came when Alexis Ruano felled Lautaro Acosta to give Racing a penalty kick.

Diop stepped up to take it, but blasted a powerful effort against the crossbar and out of play.

However, the chance seemed to inspire Racing, with Acosta sending a shot narrowly wide before Marcos Gullon forced an excellent save from Miguel Moya with a close-range header.

Michel missed the target with another long-range effort for Getafe in the 44th minute, but it was Racing who went in at half-time looking like the better side.

That changed after the break, however.

Jaime Gavilan tested Mario Fernandez early on, and then won a penalty when Diop fouled Fedor in the area, with Fedor placing the resulting penalty into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

However, the lead lasted only five minutes before Diop atoned for conceding the spot-kick, firing home after being found by Jairo Samperio's pass.

Julian Luque then saw a shot charged down by Daniel Diaz, before Getafe raced to the other end where Abdelaziz Barrada's close-range header was kept out by Fernandez.

The Racing shot-stopper then parried Pedro Leon's long-range effort before Michel fired wide.

But it was the visitors who finished on top, with Christian Stuani missing from close range before Bernardo Espinosa headed wide from a corner.
