Lionel Messi was put on this earth to smash soccer records. At just the tender age of 26, Messi is 36 goals away of becoming La Liga’s all-time topscorer, and needs only 12 more golazos to pass Raul for the Champions League’s all-time mark (look for that to happen by, oh I don’t know, next year?)

And those are just two records he's close to. Let's take a look at the ones Leo already holds or is tied for.

Messi already became Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer last season at age 24! He passed Cesar Rodriguez with a hat-trick against Granada in March 2012, giving him 234 official goals for the Blaugranes in all competitions.

Today, he stands at 313, already distancing himself significantly from Rodriguez. For a club with as rich a history as Barcelona, that’s a startling achievement at such a young age.

Also in 2011/12, Messi scored the most goals ever in a single season, with 73 (50 in La Liga, 14 in Champions League, three each in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercup, one in the UEFA Super Cup, and two in the FIFA Club World Cup).

Messi passed Gerd Mueller’s record of 67 goals by scoring a hat-trick against Malaga on May 2nd. In the process, he also became La Liga’s record holder for most goals in a season with those 50 tallies.

Messi owns the record for most hat-tricks in a single La Liga season, scoring eight in 2011/12. Yup, that’s 24 goals from just 8 games my friends. More than 99% of all players score in an entire year.

Messi is the only player besides Gerd Mueller to win four Top Scorer awards in the Champions League/European Cup. He locked down his first Top Scorer award by scoring in the 2009 Final vs. Manchester United, making him the youngest to do so. Messi led the UCL in scoring in each of the following three seasons, becoming the only player to win four Top Scorer awards in a row.

Two converted penalties against AC Milan in the second leg of the 2012 Champions League quarterfinals gave Messi 14 goals in the competition, the highest single-season total by a player in the UCL era.

His feat is only matched all-time by Jose Altafini’s 14 goals back in 1962-63 European Cup season with Milan.

Last season in the Champions League Round of 16, Messi scored five goals in a 7-1 rout of Bayer Leverkusen, marking the first time in the UCL era that a player has scored five in a single match. It was only the 11th time ever this has been achieved in the European Cup.

Messi is one of just four players (Mario Gomez, Filippo Inzaghi, and yes, Michael Owen!) to have scored three hat-tricks in the Champions League. He’s the only player to score two hat-tricks in one season (2011/12)

Messi’s brace against Spartak Moscow last month marked the 19th different city he’s scored in in the Champions League. That matches Raul’s feat for most cities ever!

Messi’s double against Moscow also meant he passed Raul for most Champions League games (14) in which a player has scored two or more goals.

Before the 2012/13 season, Messi was already one of three players (Ronaldo and Mariano Martin) to have scored in 10 consecutive La Liga games. This past season, Messi decided that wasn't quite good enough. In a March game against Deportivo La Coruna, Messi scored in his 17th consecutive league game, an all-time world record!

Despite nursing a bruised left knee towards the end of 2012, Messi clinched the record for most goals in a calendar year when he netted his second goal in Barcelona's match against Real Betis on Sunday Dec. 9, 2012. The Argentine wizard broke Gerd Mueller's 40-year-old record of 85 goals with that strike. Just for good measure, he added six more to bring his total to 91 goals. Again, in one year.
