Arsenal vs. Chelsea

GUNNING FOR THE BLUES

There was a long period when Chelsea were the Achilles’ heel of this Arsenal team, with the Blues dealing the Gunners five straight losses. That was finally snapped two Decembers ago and since then, the tide seems to have turned. If the Gunners hold serve this time out, a lot of the credit will go to Santi Cazorla, a world-class talent who has stepped into the playmaker role with aplomb. The new-look Gunners do badly miss Robin van Persie and Alex Song but they have proven to be unexpectedly resilient this season because Cazorla breaks the pressure on the defense. If he can now get one of Arsenal’s corps of forwards firing regualrly, this will be a very tough team to handle indeed.

HAZARDOUS TO OPPONENTS

The reigning European Champions come into the game unbeaten, with but a single draw marring an otherwise perfect five-game streak. A large portion of the credit has to go to Eden Hazard, the young Belgian the Blues plucked from Lille this past summer. He’s shaping up as the best transfer signing of the year, nimbly stepping into an established Chelsea lineup with a string of virtuoso performances. His passing and vision have made him nigh impossible to contain: expect the slower Arsenal backline to struggle against his incision.
