Steve Clarke made no attempt to defend Goran Popov after the West Brom player was sent off for spitting during Tottenham's win at The Hawthorns.

The defender was dismissed two minutes into the second half for spitting in Kyle Walker's direction following an exchange of words between the two.

At that stage the game was goalless, and Spurs went on to win thanks to a single Gareth Bale goal to leave Albion without a victory since Boxing Day.

Clarke said: "The game changed with the sending off. I'm absolutely disgusted with Goran's behaviour. One of the group has let the players down.

"It's difficult enough in the Premier League playing against 11 players, especially when you're playing against Tottenham.

"There's no excuse for that. There's no place for it in life, never mind on a football pitch. I would like to think that at some stage he will apologise.

"As always there will be disciplinary procedures taken against the player but they'll remain in-house."

The manager was all the more upset because his side had held their own during the first half.

He said: "We played good football and created chances and I thought we were the better team, first half. We played very, very well."

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas confirmed in his post-match press conference that Defoe would be withdrawn from Roy Hodgson's squad ahead of the Wembley clash.

Defoe suffered the injury in the first half at The Hawthorns, when he landed awkwardly on his left ankle after avoiding a challenge from Shane Long and was substituted.

Villas-Boas said Defoe would be sent for a scan to determine the extent of the damage.

Villas Boas said: "I am extremely happy with the win - apart from the injury to Jermain Defoe.

"He rolled his ankle. He will have to have a scan to reveal th extent of the injury.

"Hopefully there is not a lot of ligament damage. If there is, he could be out for two to three weeks.

"Has he been withdrawn from the England squad? Yes he has."

Curle was dismissed on Sunday after just two wins in 11 games and former Arsenal striker Kiwomya, who is the development squad manager at Meadow Lane, has been handed temporary control.

He will take charge of the Magpies' trip to Stevenage in League One on Tuesday.
