Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31988297 Best managers 2013 Best+managers+2013 Champions League

And so ends another exhilarating year of world soccer. 2013 provided fans with the usual highs and lows, as well as another year full of managerial casualties. The amazing volume of hirings and firings led the LMA (League Managers' Association) to brand the statistics 'embarrassing'. There are bosses out there that enjoyed their 2013, picking up some silverware in the process. Here is our selection of the best gaffers to survive the chop and bring success to their clubs/countries this season.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31988299 Jupp Heynckes, Bayern Munich Jupp+Heynckes%2C+Bayern+Munich Champions League

What a way to end a career, right? After a disappointing 2011-12 campaign where he witnessed his team lose a heart-breaking European final against Chelsea at Allianz Arena, Heynckes rallied Bayern Munich to an unprecedented triple helping the German giants capture the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League titles last season.

What made Heynckes' run so special, of course, was the manner in which Bayern dominated their opposition. Bayern broke multiple Bundesliga records and finished 25 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund. Later this past May, Bayern beat Dortmund for its fifth Champions League title in history, then beat Stuttgart in the final of the German Cup a week later.

Unexpectedly, however, Bayern decided not to extend Heynckes' contract and hired former Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola. The decision puzzled many, especially considering the amount of success Bayern experienced under Heynckes during their historic run. Heynckes would later admit that it was time for change and left with his held up high. Which is nothing short what you come to expect from FOX Soccer's 2013 Manager of the Year.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31988301 Luiz Felipe Scolari, Brazil Luiz+Felipe+Scolari%2C+Brazil Champions League

It's not always that you see a former World Cup-winning manager on the unemployment line waiting for a future opportunity. But that's exactly what happened to Scolari before Brazil set their sights on the former Chelsea boss for a second stint with the Verde-Amarela in 2012. Following disappointing results under Mano Menezes in Copa America and the 2012 Olympics, Brazil turned to Felipão in hopes of making a strong run for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The five-time World Cup winners were instantly rewarded with their decision as Scolari led Brazil to an impressive 2013 Confederations Cup run that was culminated with a dominating 3-0 victory over Spain in June. Scolari's system, an open-flow counter-attacking scheme from the wings, is what Brazil fans have come to learn and love. If this past summer was any inidication, expect big things from Scolari's Brazil come 2014.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31988300 Miguel Herrera, Club America / Mexico Miguel+Herrera%2C+Club+America+%2F+Mexico Champions League

Say what you want about him, Herrera's never shy to back down from a challenge. During his first press conference as Club America manager, Herrera revealed that he signed a six month contract with Mexico City club saying, "if in six months I don't give results, I leave."  After helping Club America to a third place finish in the 2012 Clausura campaign, the club rewarded their faith in Herrera and signed the former Monterrey and Atlante manager to a long-term extension. Herrera would then in turn deliver America their eleventh league title in history by defeating Cruz Azul in a dramatic penalty kick shootut in May 2013 giving the fomer Mexican defender his first title as manager and will lead his country to next summer's World Cup in Brazil after rescuing El Tri from World Cup qualifying disaster earlier this year.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31988302 Jurgen Klinsmann, USA Jurgen+Klinsmann%2C+USA Champions League

It's been a stellar year for Klinsmann. Under the German's guidance, the USMNT won the Gold Cup, qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for the seventh straight time and proved they can mix it with some of Europe's big guns with some impressive performances in exhibition matches.

The year started poorly, a goalless draw against Canada which was followed by a 2-1 defeat to Honduras in a World Cup qualifier. On top of that, a meticulously reported Sporting News story by Brian Straus cited a slew of active national teamers anonymously griping about Klinsmann’s methods. Yet Klinsmann and his men never looked back.

The United States went on a 12-match unbeaten run in competetive play which secured their place in Brazil and sealed a fifth CONCACAF Gold Cup title courtesy of Brek Shea's second-half goal against Panama. Klinsmann was rewarded for his efforts with a four-year deal which will take him up to the 2018 World Cup. If Klinsmann can get the United States out of next year's group containing Germany, Portugal and Ghana his name will go down in the annuls as one of the best coaches the country has ever had and has gone from strength to strength since losing to Honduras in a World Cup qualifier in February, winning the Gold Cup.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31988298 Jurgen Klopp, Borussia Dortmund Jurgen+Klopp%2C+Borussia+Dortmund Champions League

If Bayern Munich did not exist Jurgen Klopp could be standing on the edge of greatness. Unfortunately for him, Bayern not only exist but stand head and shoulders above Dortmund in terms of performances and silverware this year.

Dortmund finished runners-up to their bitter rivals in the 2012-13 Bundesliga season, albeit by 25 points, but the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium between the sides was a much closer affair. Ilkay Gundogan equalized with a 68th-minute penalty but Arjen Robben broke the hearts of the Dortmund supporters with a late winner.

This season, Dortmund were just four minutes away from being eliminated from the Champions League until Kevin Grosskreutz scored to secure a 2-1 win at Marseille. That result proved enough for Dortmund to finish top of their group and send Napoli into the Europa League. In the league Klopp has struggled to get Dortmund firing on all cylinders and his team are facing a fight to finish in the top four after a three-match winless run before Christmas.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31986477 Carlo Ancelotti, Paris St. Germain / Real Madrid Carlo+Ancelotti%2C+Paris+St.+Germain+%2F+Real+Madrid Champions League

Ancelotti has been trusted with a lot money over the past year. Firstly, spending huge sums on players such as Thiago Silva, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lucas Moura at Paris Saint-Germain, and more recently lavishing over $130 million on Gareth Bale at Real Madrid. Nevertheless, the Italian has moulded his expensive recruits into good teams. PSG won the Ligue 1 title for the first time since 1994 under his supervision and reached the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with the Parisian giants. After intense negotiation, the former AC Milan and Chelsea boss made the jump to the Spanish capital in hopes of helping Los Merengues claim the La Liga and Champions League titles this season.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31986479 Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United Sir+Alex+Ferguson%2C+Manchester+United Champions League

This man needs no introduction, but we're doing so anyway. Sir Alex Ferguson has won 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 Champions League honors and it would have been cruel not to mention him in this list. He announced his retirement on May 8 and rounded an astonishing career off in soccer with a final Premier League trophy at the end of the season. With Manchester United's current form under David Moyes, pundits cannot help but wonder if United's struggles are attributed to Ferguson's influence on and off the pitch.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31986481 Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid Diego+Simeone%2C+Atletico+Madrid Champions League

Since leaving Racing in 2011, Simeone has turned Atletico’s fortunes around. Atletico had been languishing just above mid-table for a couple of seasons before the Argentinian made them into regular European qualifiers. This year alone Simeone guided Atletico to a third-place finish in La Liga (second so far this term) and to Copa del Rey success after defeating rival Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. In managerial terms, Simeone is only a spring chicken so expect more achievements in the near future from the former Inter and Atletico Madrid legend.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31986478 Antonio Conte, Juventus Antonio+Conte%2C+Juventus Champions League

Without a doubt Conte is one of the best managers in the world game. Since taking over The Old Lady, Conte, has an almost unblemished record, winning two Scudettos and two Supercopa Italiana’s while serving a four month suspension after being found guilty of failing to report fixing during his time with Siena in Serie B. Though the former Juve player missed 15 Serie A matches and six of Juve's group games in the Champions League last season, Conte remains one of the best tacticians in the sport with an uncanny ability bond his players together.

Champions League 185 2820 FOX Soccer - Best Managers of 2013 31986480 Rafa Benitez, Chelsea / Napoli Rafa+Benitez%2C+Chelsea+%2F+Napoli Champions League

The former Liverpool and Inter Milan boss walked into the Chelsea job through a tirade of criticism and left with his head held high. Benitez ensured he gained the respect of the fans that were so against his appointment as manager by winning the Europa League and ensuring the London side's Champions League qualification. At the end of last season, he left Chelsea for Seria A side Napoli. Since then his team were unfortunate to go out of the Champions League after finding themselves in the Group of Death and remain third in Serie A.
