The Tampa Bay Rays outfielder was named the American League’s outstanding rookie in the MLB Players Choice Awards on Monday night. Myers, 22, was a much-hyped prospect gained in a blockbuster trade with the Kansas City Royals last December, and he provided the Rays with an offensive spark after he made his majors debut June 18 against the Boston Red Sox.
Myers finished the regular season with a .293 batting average with 13 homers and 53 RBI. He hit a season-best .352 with four homers and 18 RBI in July.
Rays third baseman Evan Longoria won the same award in 2008.
