Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left middle finger. Jason Bourgeois was promoted from Triple-A Durham to fill his place on the roster.
Jennings sprained the finger Saturday while sliding in a victory over the San Francisco Giants at Tropicana Field, but X-rays initially came back negative, according to Jennings. On Sunday, manager Joe Maddon said Jennings would be available in emergency situations that afternoon, though Jennings did not play in the victory over the Giants.
Jennings’ move to the DL is retroactive to Aug. 4. He has hit .258 with 11 home runs, 17 stolen bases and 40 RBI in 104 games this season. Meanwhile, Bourgeois has hit .291 with two home runs and 57 RBI in 84 games with the Bulls.
The Rays open a two-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at Chase Field.
