Losing one of the game's top pitchers was a blow not only to the Miami Marlins but their fans.
Twitter user Andres Salgado (@latinoloco4rwf) posted a video on YouTube showing his support for Jose Fernandez, who underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery last Friday in Los Angeles.
In the clip, Salgado shaves his head and beard, promising not to cut his hair or shave his face until Fernandez is "back pitching for the Miami Marlins." The recovery time for his procedure ranges from 12 to 18 months.
"Neck beard doesn't count because we all know how stylish Jose is," Salgado said. "Gucci wear, Kanye (West) shirt, and I can't pull off a neck beard."
Salgado then rattles off an inspiring speech fit for a sports film with a backdrop that included a Marlins wrestling mask as well as 1993 and Marlins Park memorabilia.
As part of the Marlins family, he asks other fans to "do something on your own" to show Fernandez that "we'll be there ready to cheer for him" when he returns.
An active member of the social media community, Salgado urged fans to tweet #JosesHeroes and #MarlinFamily. The Marlins (23-22) are currently 1.5 games out of first in the National League East.
"Those 25 players are going to pick up where Jose left off," Salgado said. "Us as fans need to show the world that this family is made up of more than just one player. ... Show our support not only for Jose but our Miami Marlins."
