MIAMI — July 2013 will go down as a pretty impressive month for Miami Marlins rookie right-hander Jose Fernandez.
First, he was named the Marlins’ lone All-Star representative and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the Midsummer Classic. He then shared National League Player of the Week honors (July 22-28) with teammate Steve Cishek.

On Monday, Fernandez was named NL Rookie of the Month.
The 21-year-old Fernandez went 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA in five July starts. He struck out 40 and walked 10 in 35 innings. Opposing hitters batted .174 against the Cuban defector, whose WHIP — the average number of walks & hits allowed — was 0.86.
In his final start of the month, Fernandez gave up two runs, walked none and struck out 13 Pittsburgh Pirates in eight innings while winning on July 28.
