LeBron, Beckham may team up for Miami MLS franchise

Friends LeBron James and David Beckham have talked about bringing MLS team to Miami.

MIAMI -- LeBron James teaming up with David Beckham to own a professional Miami soccer franchise? That certainly would be an impressive feat.

James confirmed a report by London's Daily Mail that he had spoken with the international soccer star, who's exploring South Florida to be home for a Major League Soccer franchise.

"There is some interest on both sides," James said following the Miami Heat's Monday morning practice. "David has become a good friend of mine over the last few years. I think it would be great for this city to have a football club for sure. There is interest on both sides, but it's preliminary talks . But there is some open dialogue."

Beckham, who has attended Heat games at the American Airlines Arena, was in town recently to view possible stadium sites and to finalize negotiations with investors. He visited Florida International University and Marlins Park.

The former LA Galaxy midfielder, who was offered the chance to buy an MLS franchise at a discount when he arrived in the U.S. in 2007, must complete such as deal within a year of retiring from MLS action. He announced his retirement in May.

James already has ties to soccer. He bought a minority share in Liverpool FC in 2011.

"I think this is a great town for soccer," James said of Miami. "There are a lot of soccer players here. There's great youth soccer players here and people love the city as well. That definitely would help."

Sons LeBron Jr. and Bryce have helped improve the King's soccer knowledge.

"I've grown a great interest in watching the game and learning it and it's a pretty intense sport," James said. "And my kids love it as well. But I've grown to the point where I know exactly what's going on when I’m watching the game."

The chances of James and Beckham teaming up in Miami?

"It's like buying a house," James said. "You don't know until you sign the papers."
