The road to recovery from Tommy John surgery begins Tuesday for Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez.

Fernandez took to his Instagram account Monday night to detail the process.

"Flying to LA tomorrow to FINALLY get my cast and stitches removed! Wednesday starts the rehab. One step at a time will get me back on the mound. #JDF16"

The 21-year-old had the procedure performed May 16 in Los Angeles by Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. The average timetable for a return ranges from 12 to 18 months.

Miami is 7-9 since Fernandez's last start, which came May 9 in San Diego -- a 10-1 loss. The Marlins (27-25) sit two games back of the Atlanta Braves for first in the National League East.
