On August 6 and 7, eight prestigious clubs from across Europe and the United States will call South Florida home for two days as they compete for the coveted International Champions Cup Trophy. In the first of an eight part series, we take a look at Real Madrid.
Real Madrid is looking to add the International Champions Cup Trophy to an already long list of its championships, including 32 Spanish league titles, 18 Copa del Rey titles, and nine European Championship trophies. Decades of dominance led Real Madrid to being named the FIFA Club of the Century in December of 2000, and they will begin their quest of the International Champions Cup Trophy in a highly anticipated contest with Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy.
In the club’s 111 year storied history, Real Madrid has made 15 trips to the United States, but the International Champions Cup will mark the first time in team history that a game will be played in Miami.
On June 26, Real Madrid announced Carlo Ancelloti as the team’s new manager replacing Jose Mourinho, who recently departed to manage Chelsea. This sets up the possibility of Ancelloti, who has coached both AC Milan and Chelsea, facing one of his former teams in the International Champions Cup Championship game at Sun Life Stadium. Carlo Ancelloti, who also played for AC Milan, is well known for his great success, having won numerous championships as both a player and a coach.
Real Madrid’s roster is headlined by internationally renowned soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2011-2012, Ronaldo led Real Madrid to the La Liga Championship, earning Alfredo Di Stefano Trophy as the top La Liga player of the year. Ronaldo is also well known as the most expensive soccer player in history for his transfer fee of $131.6 million from Manchester United in 2009.
Madrid’s roster includes many more top international players including Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas of the Spanish National Team, Mesut Özil of the German National team, and Marcelo and Ángel di María of Brazil.
