On August 6 and 7, eight prestigious clubs from across Europe
and the United States will call South Florida home for two days as they
compete for the coveted International Champions Cup Trophy. In the fourth
of an eight-part series, we take a look at Everton.
Based in Liverpool, Everton in one of England’s most well-known and successful teams, having won nine league titles, five FA Cups and the European Cup Winner’s Cup. Since its founding in 1878, Everton has spent more time in the top division than any other team in England, and is currently one of seven teams to have played in all 21 seasons of the Premiere League.
Most recently, Everton finished sixth in the 2012-13 Premier League season.
Everton is led by goalie Tim Howard, a member of the United States National Team. Howard got his first real professional experience in the MLS with the MetroStars, before transferring to Manchester United and now Everton. In 2010, Howard served as the starting goalkeeper for the US Men’s National Team in the World Cup played in South Africa.
Other standouts from the Everton squad include English National Team member Leighton Baines, and Belgian International Marouane Fellaini. Both have been pursued heavily this summer by other clubs.
There have also been many changes in Everton this summer.
Roberto Martinez is the club’s new manager, coming over from Wigan, where he most recently led the team to the 2012-13 FA Cup, the first major championship in the club’s history.
New additions to the roster include Antonin Alcaraz, Joel Robles, and Gerad Deulofue. Both Alcaraz, a defender from Paraguay and Robles, a goalkeeper from Spain, come to Everton after recently playing for new manager Martinez in Wigan. Deulofue, a winger from Spain, comes to Everton on loan from F.C. Barcelona.
Everton will begin its 2013 International Champions Cup play against the Italian club Juventus in San Francisco. This will mark the first time that the two clubs have ever met.
