Come August, Tropicana Field will have a unique visitor: A Joe Maddon Mr. Potato Head.
The creative prize, set to appear Aug. 2 against the Los Angeles Angels, is one of 18 premium giveaway items that will be handed out on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the Tampa Bay Rays’ home schedule. Other trinkets include the Wil Myers Rookie of the Year bobblehead (April 5 vs. Texas), a DJ Kitty plush hat (May 10 vs. Cleveland), a Christ Archer Christmas stocking (July 27 vs. Boston) and an Evan Longoria ’80s hair band drummer bobblehead (Sept. 6 vs. Baltimore).
Last year’s give away of a gnome in the likeness of Maddon was in such demand, the team did it twice.
Meanwhile, kids’ promotional items on Sundays include a Desmond Jennings "baseball buddy" (April 6 vs. Texas), a Ben Zobrist wiffle ball set (June 22 vs. Houston), a Yunel Escobar basketball hoop (July 13 vs. Toronto) and a Matt Moore kids plate and cup set (Aug. 31 vs. Boston).
On Mother’s Day, a May 11 game against Cleveland, the first 10,000 women will receive a Rays sun hat. And to celebrate Father’s Day early, the first 10,000 men will receive a James Loney grill set before a June 8 game against Seattle.
Finally, "ticket tandem" items, available with the purchase of a special ticket for Friday games, include an Alex Cobb military bobblehead (May 23 vs. Boston), a Don Zimmer snowglobe (July 25 vs. Boston), Maddon wine glasses (Aug. 1 vs. Los Angeles) and a Raymond gnome (Aug. 29 vs. Boston).
Regular-season single-game tickets go on sale March 1 through raysbaseball.com.
