Two Florida State players were named semifinalists for two of the most prestigious major college football awards on Tuesday.
Quarterback Jameis Winston is one of 16 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which is presented annually to college football’s top player. Winston, the only freshman on the list, has thrown for 2,177 yards, 23 touchdowns and just four interceptions in seven games. He has already matched the number of TD passes that EJ Manuel threw in 2012 as a senior.
Cornerback Lamarcus Joyner is one of 16 semifinalists for the Bednarik Award, which is presented to the most outstanding defensive player. Joyner, who moved over from safety to corner for his senior season, has 37 tackles, three sacks and an interception in 2013.
No. 3 Florida State (7-0) will play No. 6 Miami (7-0) on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Tallahassee.
