Freshman LB Matthew Thomas to miss rest of FSU season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — True freshman linebacker Matthew Thomas will have season-ending shoulder surgery, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said after Tuesday’s practice.

Thomas, a five-star recruit who played at Miami’s Booker T. Washington High, played in four games and had four tackles and a sack for the Seminoles. He missed Florida State’s past two games.

“Disappointed but not devastated,” Fisher said about Thomas’ reaction to the surgery. “He handled it very well.”

Florida State will appeal to the NCAA on Thomas’ behalf for a medical redshirt, but it’s not a guarantee that he will receive one.

Fisher said tailback James Wilder is still day-to-day with a concussion that he suffered in the Clemson game on Saturday.
