FAU stadium to take name of correctional facility operator

There are plenty of teams and schools wishing they had a naming rights deal for their stadium, so you won’t hear FAU apologizing for handing the name of its football stadium to a company that runs correctional facilities.
Yeah, you read that right, FAU’s on-campus stadium, which opened in 2011, will be named for The GEO Group, which specializes in “the design, financing, development, and operation of correctional, detention, and community reentry facilities around the globe” according to an FAU press release.
The school will receive a $6 million “gift” from The GEO Group — paid out over the next 12 years.
While the company’s specialty may be a little outside the norm of a typical sponsor, it is headquartered in Boca Raton and its founder and CEO, George Zoley, is an FAU alumnus and former chair of the school’s Board of Trustees.
“We are incredibly grateful for this wonderful gift,” said FAU President Mary Jane Saunders. “It is so exciting to now have a name for our beautiful stadium, and I couldn’t think of a better way to do that than by way of philanthropy. This gift is a true representation of The GEO Group’s incredible generosity to FAU and the community it serves.”
