Fans can visit 'Revis Island, Fla.' on Thursday only

The city of Treasure Island, Fla. will change its name to Revis Island on Thursday.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis will have a Florida city named after him.

For one day.

The City of Treasure Island, Fla., by special proclamation of Mayor Bob Minning, will change its name to Revis Island, Fla. on Thursday.  The city is located about 30 miles southwest of Tampa.

"I'm honored and humbled to receive this special honor from the City of Treasure Island," Revis said on the team's website. "Ever since I became a Buccaneer, the support I've received from the Tampa Bay community has been tremendous. I'll do my best to live up to this honor on Sunday afternoon in our home opener against the New Orleans Saints."

In the mayoral proclamation, Revis Island is described as "an island filled with interceptions, touchdown returns and batted passes."

Fans can attend the 2 p.m. ET ceremony -- at The Club at Treasure Island, 400 Treasure Island Causeway -- and are encouraged to wear Buccaneers colors, jerseys and apparel. Bucs cheerleaders, mascot and front office representatives are expected to be in attendance.

"Despite Sunday's heartbreaking loss to the Jets, we're still very excited about the upcoming season," Minning said. "Darrelle Revis was an outstanding offseason acquisition. We wanted to welcome Mr. Revis to our island community and celebrate the Bucs' 2013 home opener in a fun, family-friendly way. Go Bucs!"

Via Buccaneers.com, Mayor Minning, when asked to describe the differences between Treasure Island and Revis Island, said: "In Treasure Island, we have the most beautiful beaches in all of Tampa Bay, and we always remind beachgoers to wear the appropriate sun screen.

"But I guess at Revis Island, you don’t need any sun screen -- because at Revis Island, you're ALWAYS covered!"
