Ben Zobrist makes fan's day with elementary school visit

Rays utility star Ben Zobrist made Alex Ortiz's day when he visited his school in late May.

For one morning, Ben Zobrist went back to school … and made a fan’s day.

On May 28, the Tampa Bay Rays infielder/outfielder was a special guest of second-grader Alex Ortiz of Corbett Preparatory School of Independent Day School in Tampa.

Alex, 7, won the chance to enjoy Zobrist’s company as part of the annual “Take Ben Zobrist to School” event sponsored by MetroPCS.

Alex introduced Zobrist at an assembly. Zobrist also visited Alex’s classroom, where he signed autographs and answered questions from students. In time, Alex and Zobrist took a moment to play baseball on the playground.

“It has been really fun spending a lot of time with him.” Alex said that day.

“There are so many fans that he has. … It is so special to have him here.”
