We’ll start the Week One preview by looking at some Quarterbacks to target and then move to Running Backs, Wide Receivers and Tight Ends later in the week. All picks are based on both matchup and their DraftKings salary.
Colin Kaepernick vs. DAL ($8,000) – I’m not a huge fan of Kaep overall, but given the matchup with the Cowboys it’s hard to resist going after him in Week One. The Cowboys should have a prolifically bad defense. They lost DeMarcus Ware to free agency, Sean Lee to an injury and Orlando Scandrick to suspension. They lost arguably their best player at each level of the defense, from a defense that was horrible a season ago. They averaged 286.8 passing yards per game allowed in 2013 and their top CB, Brandon Carr, allowed 44 receptions on 69 targets his way in the last 8 games to go along with 619 receiving yards. They won’t be able to contain Kaep when he rushes, and their secondary is too porous to stop him through the air either.
Carson Palmer vs. SD ($7,500) – Palmer was surprisingly impressive over the last 7 games of the 2013 season while leading the Cardinals into the playoff hunt down the stretch. He had 4 games in that span with at least 300 passing yards and topped 400 yards in two different games. In each of those 300+ passing yard games, he also tallied 20+ fantasy points under DraftKings scoring system. Looking at the Week 1 matchup, you have to like the opponent in San Diego. The Chargers allowed the fourth most passing yards per game a season ago and they were 24th in the league in red zone scoring percentage allowed, with opponents scoring touchdowns on over 66% of RZ opportunities. Palmer returns both Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd and another year of working with those two should improve this offense even further.
Andrew Luck vs. DEN ($8,300) – Luck threw 3 second half touchdowns against the Broncos in Week 7 of last season and rushed for another en route to a 30 fantasy point performance. The Broncos defense is certainly improved this year with the additions of Talib and Ware, but you can still expect their offense to put up points and push the tempo of the game which forces opponents into throwing a lot. I’d expect the Colts to be in catch up mode for most of this game and that means ample opportunities for Luck to connect with his much improved receiving corps.
Super Value: Shaun Hill vs. MIN ($5,000) – Assuming Hill remains the Week 1 starter, I think you could certainly make an argument for taking a shot on him against the Vikings defense. The Vikings were one of the worst defenses in all of football a year ago, allowing 287.2 passing yards per game to opposing offenses. They didn’t do much to improve their secondary and lost a key part of their edge rush in Jared Allen. I wouldn’t expect fantasy gold from Hill, but he’s min priced for a quarterback in a strong matchup with a receiving group that is loaded with potential/talent (Austin, Britt, and Quick). If you’re playing in a large field tournament, the matchup justifies the risk associated with Hill for Week One.
