Welcome to our daily look at daily fantasy baseball. We’ll use DraftKings salaries to give you some tips and advice on the day’s action. We’ll play the 12-game night slate. No Coors hitters for you!
Remember to check lineups and weather as gametimes approach. We’ll publish this piece in the mornings, and a lot can happen during the day. If Dusty Baker decides to bench Bryce Harper at the last minute, don’t blame us!
I’ll plan to wager $6 per day on DraftKings - $5 on a cash lineup, $1 on a tournament version (usually single-entry) – and track my progress all season. If you’re a more serious player who doesn’t want to trust his or her bankroll on a guy who enters six bucks a day, I’ll understand.
The cash lineup benefited from subbing Eric Young Jr. for the absent Allen Cordoba, but the tournament lineups fell short. It’s too bad that I was sooooooo close to rostering Scooter Gennett, but didn’t pull the trigger. I knew he was going to have a good game!
(Note: I wasn’t really close to rostering Gennett and his 71 DK points at all. Can you believe the night that guy had?)
Season status: Minus $25
News & notes
Zack Greinke ($12,400) is the night’s biggest favorite at minus-216 over the terrible Padres … The highest projected run total is 10 for Angels-Tigers (Meyer-Farmer) … The lowest projected total is eight for Astros-Royals (Keuchel-Vargas).
Blue Jays 2B Devon Travis (knee) is on the DL … So are Justin Bour (ankle), Mike Napoli (back) and Yasmany Tomas (groin) … Masahiro Tanaka’s brutal season continued with three homers allowed to the Red Sox on Tuesday … The Rays will call up SP Jacob Faria to make his major-league debut today against the White Sox, but he’s not in the DraftKings pool.

How in the world is Mookie Betts only $4,400 vs. CC Sabathia? He’s the 29th-most expensive outfielder on the board. Whaaaaaaaat?
USA TODAY SportsPatrick Gorski
Cash: Mariners OF Guillermo Heredia ($3,100) is likely to bat first or second vs. Twins’ lefty Adalberto Mejia. Heredia has a .382 wOBA in 57 plate appearances vs. LHP this season. Mejia has been getting knocked around by righties, allowing four homers and an .839 OPS.
Tournaments: Want to live a bit dangerously? Tigers SP Buck Farmer ($4,000) faces an Angels’ offense that was one of MLB’s worst even when Mike Trout was healthy. Farmer misses a decent amount of bats, throws strikes, and can help you afford a lot of good hitters. Also, the Tigers are a minus-145 favorite in this game. There's a path to success here.
I’ve said before that I always get CC Sabathia wrong, but he has a 6.17 home ERA so far this season, and the big Red Sox hitters are less expensive than usual. Also, though the Cardinals have been slumping, they’ll face Bronson Arroyo, who has a 6.24 ERA and has MLB’s highest HR/9 rate by a wide margin. Their top four on Tuesday were Fowler/Carpenter/Piscotty/Gyorko.
Note: If you stack Red Sox, make sure to check the lineup as gametime approaches. Andrew Benintendi has been sitting in favor of Chris Young lately versus southpaws.
The Guys to Avoid
We’re going to stay away from Michael Conforto against Yu Darvish. Also, with Lance Lynn shutting down RHB (.443 OPS, .201 wOBA), don’t use Adam Duvall.
Starting pitcher: The choice between Dallas Keuchel ($12,500) and Zack Greinke ($12,400) is a tough one. Both face bad opponents, with Greinke’s a little bit worse in a hitter’s park. I’d lean toward Greinke in a home start … Jimmy Nelson ($7,900) has 70.6 DK points over his last two starts, and faces the Giants, who aren’t quite so terrible on the road … Mike Foltynewicz ($7,700) has K upside against a Phillies lineup that hasn’t hit well vs. RHP (.310 wOBA) … John Lackey ($7,400) has been inconsistent, but he’s a big favorite vs. the Bour-less Marlins … You can see a path for Wade Miley ($6,900) to work his groundball magic against a Pirates squad that ranks 24th in wOBA vs. LHP (.293) … The same goes for San Diego’s Luis Perdomo ($5,900), though his matchup at Arizona is much riskier … Farmer is mentioned above.
Catcher: Yadier Molina ($4,000) has 41 DK points in his last three starts, and faces Arroyo … Did you know that Tyler Flowers (#3,800) has a .935 OPS? … Alex Avila ($3,700) has homers in three straight games, and will probably bat second vs. Meyer … If it’s Sandy Leon’s turn to play for the Red Sox, he’ll check in at $2,700 vs. Sabathia.
First base: BvP alert: Paul Goldschmidt ($5,500) is 7-for-13 with two homers vs. Perdomo … Lance Lynn has always been terrible vs. LHB, making Joey Votto ($4,900) a strong play … Chad Kuhl has allowed a .442 wOBA and all five of his home runs vs. LHB. Chris Davis ($4,600) faces him tonight … Matt Carpenter ($4,100) couldn’t break out of his slump vs. Tim Adleman. How about Arroyo? … Danny Valencia ($4,000) has always been a lefty masher (.375 wOBA, .867 OPS). He’ll face Minnesota’s Mejia … Hanley Ramirez ($3,900) looks good, but I always get Sabathia wrong … If Luis Valbuena ($2,600) plays for the Angels, he’ll be a good tournament value option.
Second base: Gennett is $3,600 for a matchup with Lynn, who stinks vs. LHB. If Gennett bats in a good lineup slot, he’s playable, and would be even if last night had never happened … Jose Altuve ($5,500) is the best play at this position, but I’d probably spend my money elsewhere … Ian Kinsler ($4,300) looks solid vs. Meyer … So does Josh Harrison ($4,200) vs. Miley. I prefer Harrison to Kinsler … Can we get Jonathan Villar ($3,700) in a good lineup slot vs. a LHP, Brewers? Please? … Mariners SS Taylor Motter ($3,400) has 59 DK points in his last four games, and faces Mejia … Rougned Odor has struggled so much that he got dropped to seventh in the Rangers’ order a couple of games ago, but $2,900 vs. Zack Wheeler is tempting. Odor homered on Sunday.
Third base: Manny Machado ($4,700) went hitless Tuesday, but had 57 DK points in his previous four games. He’s warming up … Miguel Sano ($4,700) is in play vs. the terrible Gallardo. I prefer Machado to Sano, but only by a little bit … Harrison fits here, too … Jedd Gyorko ($4,200) is one of many Cardinals to consider vs. Arroyo … Jacob Faria’s Triple-A strikeout rate is excellent, but control has always been his issue (and that’s the extent of my knowledge of him). Todd Frazier ($3,900), who has homered in two straight games, can be considered vs. Faria … Valbuena fits here, too.
Shortstop: Like all Astros on most days lately, Carlos Correa ($5,600) looks like a good play if we don’t factor in his huge salary … Xander Bogaerts ($4,500) looks like a better option vs. Sabathia … Motter fits here, too … In six games since becoming the Angels’ leadoff hitter, Andrelton Simmons ($3,400) has a homer, two steals and three runs scored. Not bad, and he faces Farmer … With Jorge Polanco away for a couple of days, Eduardo Escobar ($2,700) could bat in a decent slot vs. Gallardo.
Outfield: At the high end, George Springer ($5,700) is very expensive, and Nelson Cruz ($4,900) might not play vs. a LHP due to his calf issue. Dexter Fowler ($4,900) vs. Arroyo is the first guy I’d use … Brett Gardner ($4,700) looks solid vs. Rick Porcello – better than Inciarte and Kiermaier at the same price … Betts is mentioned above. Use him if you can … Stephen Piscotty ($4,300) vs. Arroyo. Everybody vs. Arroyo! … If you like the idea of Twins vs. Gallardo, consider Max Kepler at $4,200 … Scott Schebler ($3,900) should be back in the Reds’ lineup vs. Lynn … Seth Smith ($3,700) should lead off vs. the lefty-challenged Kuhl … Remember Odubel Herrera’s slow start? He has nine hits, seven doubles, two homers, nine RBI, six runs and 85 DK points over his last four games. At $3,700, Herrera will face Foltynewicz … Gennett fits here, too … Look for Guillermo Heredia ($3,100) to bat first or second vs. Mejia … Even batting near the bottom of the Angels’ order vs. Farmer, Eric Young Jr. ($2,000) offers plenty of salary flexibility. In six games since getting called up from the minors, Young has double-digit DK points in six of them.

Note: The tournament lineup assumes that Young will bat second for the Red Sox, as he did last Thursday vs. Wade Miley. Also, if Knapp doesn't start for the Phillies, I'll replace him with either Realmuto, Cervelli or all-or-nothing Mike Zunino.
