Cruz is set to assume primary catching duties for the Cardinals in the wake of Yadier Molina's (thumb) ligament tear, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.
Cruz will ascend from the role of sparingly-used backup to everyday catcher, with Molina set to miss the next two-to-three months due to the injury. After announcing the somber news on Molina, GM John Mozeliak indicated he had the ultimate confidence in Cruz. However, if Cruz struggles both offensively and with managing the pitching staff during his run as starter, don't be surprised if the Cardinals address the trade market for a No. 1 catcher in the interim. A.J. Pierzynski could be a top target for the Cardinals, after the Red Sox designated him for assignment Wednesday.
