The Angels are optimistic Richards (knee) will be ready to return during spring training, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports.
Richards, who will undergo season-ending knee surgery next week, was given a recovery timetable of six-to-nine months, seemingly leaving his return date rather open-ended. However, the doctors who conducted his MRI believe Richards is a perfect candidate for surgery because he tore his patellar tendon in a spot that should make the operation relatively easy. Since Richards hasn't started rehabbing yet, it's probably to early to tell if he will in fact meet the short end of that timetable, but the medical staff's optimism does provide a silver lining to an otherwise bleak development.
