Avila is currently expected to play the majority of the games at catcher next season, though the Tigers are prepared to make James McCann more of a presence behind the plate, the Detroit News reports.
Experts have determined that Avila will be fine to resume a regular workload behind the plate in 2015 despite his history of concussions -- he suffered three last season alone -- but it sounds like he'll essentially be grooming his eventual replacement in McCann. McCann could work himself into a short-end platoon role with a strong spring, with the report suggesting he could move into a relatively even timeshare with Avila as the season progresses. The Tigers are expected to let Avila, who posted just a .686 OPS last year, walk at the conclusion of the 2015 campaign.
