Chavez (knee) announced his retirement Wednesday, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports.
The 36-year-old Chavez enjoyed a superb 17-year career, winning six consecutive Gold Glove awards to accompany his six 25-plus homer seasons, most of those coming with the "Moneyball"-era A's. Injuries marred his production after he hit 30, with his latest knee issue proving too painful for him to continue playing. With his retirement taking effect immediately, Chavez, who was listed on the Diamondbacks' 60-day DL, will voluntarily forfeit over $1 million in salary.
