What's on second? Mets lose Murphy to DL

Daniel Murphy's calf strain will keep him out for awhile.

Daniel Murphy is batting .301 with nine home runs, 13 stolen bases and 73 runs scored.

Mets 2B Daniel Murphy is probably underrated - he's been fantasy's seventh-best second baseman this season, according to scoring. Murphy's owners know how good he is, and they'll miss him while he's on the DL with a calf strain. Murphy has been day to day since Monday, and the results of a Thursday MRI caused the team's DL decision.

The Mets have called up 20-year-old Dilson Herrera to take Murphy's roster spot, and Herrera's minor-league numbers (.319 BA, 12 HR, 24 SB between A ball and Double A) should make him interesting to NL-only owners, I don't think I'd grab the extremely young Herrera in any mixed leagues, though.

Thursday's studs & duds

Stud: Giants SP Yusemiro Petit was the day's best pitcher, allowing one run in six innings while striking out nine Rockies. Petit's strong start might keep Tim Lincecum out of the Giants' rotation.

Stud: Twins OF Jordan Schafer was terrific, getting three hits, four RBI, a couple of runs scored and a stolen base in an extra-inning win over the Royals.

Stud: Reds 1B Todd Frazier had two hits, two RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases against the Cubs.

News & notes

Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo, who has missed two straight games with back tightness, hopes to play tonight.

Cardinals C Yadier Molina had three more hits at Double-A Springfield on Thursday. Molina says he's "ready to go," and will probably be activated before tonight's game.

Look for Indians C Yan Gomes (concussion) to come off the DL today.

Tony Sipp got Thursday's save for the Astros. What should we make of that, since Chad Qualls has struggled lately? The Houston Chronicle reports that Sipp "handled the ninth for the save on a night Qualls was given off to rest."

The A's will juggle their rotation a bit for this weekend, with Jeff Samardzija moving up to Saturday, and Scott Kazmir getting pushed back to Sunday for some extra rest.

The Rays say they'll cap Drew Smyly's innings after two or three more starts.

Masahiro Tanaka threw a 49-pitch simulated game on Thursday, and the Yankees seem to think he'll pitch sometime in September. World Series title No. 28, here we come!

Royals 2B Omar Infante should be ready to play tonight after missing a few days with a sore shoulder. In other Royals' news, 1B Eric Hosmer (broken hand) might begin a rehab assignment this weekend.

Two doubleheaders are on Saturday's schedule: Tigers-White Sox and Cubs-Cardinals.

Collin' McHugh's solid Thursday outing raised our record to 82-53 for the season. The weekend picks are Jacob deGrom (owned in 29.3 percent of leagues) tonight against the Phillies; D-backs lefty Vidal Nuno (0.7 percent owned) versus the Rockies on Saturday; and Royals' lefty Danny Duffy (38.3 percent owned) against the Indians on Sunday. Duffy's control has improved lately - he's allowed just seven walks in 30 2/3 innings over his last five starts.

See you back here tomorrow morning.
