Royal pain: Gordon's return uncertain
Want to get all warm and fuzzy about Royals OF Alex Gordon? Read this story from today's Kansas City Star. It describes Gordon as completely dedicated to his craft, with a diligent exercise regimen, healthy diet and excellent work habits. He's apparently the perfect teammate as well.
Unfortunately, Gordon has been out since July 9 due to a wrist injury. A Thursday workout "went well," according to Star beat reporter Andy McCullough, and there's "hope he avoids the DL." When the Royals visit Boston tonight, it's possible that Gordon will be in the lineup, but you'll need a backup plan if you own him in a daily lineup league.
News & notes
Brewers SS Jean Segura, who left the team last Saturday due to the death of his infant son, will be back with the team today. However, it's not yet clear when he'll be activated. It should be sometime this weekend, but not necessarily tonight. However, with backup Jeff Bianchi (elbow) headed for the DL, Segura's presence is even more important.
Remember yesterday's post in this space, which led with the note that the Astros were ready to activate OF Dexter Fowler (intercostal strain)? Manager Bo Porter said Thursday that Fowler isn't quite ready yet, and it day to day.
Hey, remember Trevor Cahill? He'll start tonight for the D-backs after more than a month in the minors. Friend of the blog Nicholas Minnix of FanGraphs thinks Cahill might be worth a flier in deep mixed leagues.
With our record at 55-40, the weekend picks are Mike Leake (owned in 35.9 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) at the Yankees on Friday; Marcus Stroman (10 percent owned) versus the Rangers on Saturday; and San Diego's Odrisamer Despaigne (8.7 percent owned) against the Mets on Sunday. I don't like Sunday's options all that much, but chose Despaigne based on ballpark and opponent.
See you back here Monday morning.
