Closer updates

A few fantasy closer roles took steps toward clearing up on Thursday.

Frieri has eight saves with a 4.30 ERA.

Let's get our weekend started with some closer updates ...

Jason Grilli got the Pirates' save on Thursday. In a closely related development, Mark Melancon pitched the eighth inning. Looks like Grilli is back in the saddle. Grilli is owned in 66.2 percent of leagues.

Ernesto Frieri got the final two outs of the Angels' win on Thursday, shortly after Joe Smith pitched the eighth inning. Mike Scioscia had been using a timeshare here, but Frieri has three saves since Sunday. He's owned in 49.2 percent of leagues around here.

Mets' closer Jenrry Mejia struck out the side on Thursday to get his fifth save. The best thing about Mejia is that he's owned in just 19.2 percent of leagues. Get him if you still can.

On to the rest of the news:

Rays 2B Ben Zobrist is expected to be activated from the DL today.

Red Sox DH David Ortiz was scratched Thursday due to tightness in his right calf, but he's expected to play tonight.

Streaming starters: Samuel Deduno wasn't so good on Thursday, so we're down to 37-22 for the season. The weekend selections are John Danks (owned in 1.4 percent of leagues) tonight against the Padres; Brandon McCarthy (3 percent owned) versus the Royals on Saturday; and Jose Quintana (13.9 percent owned) against the Padres on Sunday.

The Giants aren't yet sure if Matt Cain (hamstring) will be able to come off the DL to start on Sunday; we should know something today. Teammate Buster Posey didn't play Thursday due to lower back issues, but it's being described as "nagging." That's probably not serious, but it could keep him out for another day or two.

Angels OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) will resume his rehab assignment tonight, and could be activated within a week.

Yankee update: 1B Mark Teixeira's wrist inflammation keeps him day to day, and the team is probably thankful it isn't worse. Also, OF Carlos Beltran (elbow) participated in a soft toss session on Thursday, and if his session today finishes with no discomfort, maybe it'll be a sign that surgery isn't necessary.

Gotta cut things off here today - send me a tweet (@jhalpin37) if you have any questions over the weekend. Thanks.
