So, you drafted CC Sabathia with hopes that he'd rebound this season. Then, you watched him go on the DL with a knee injury and thought, "Maybe he'll be able to help me in the second half." Well ... maybe not. Sabathia reported swelling in his right knee the morning after his Wednesday rehab start. He's been shut down, and isn't expected to see orthopedist Dr. James Andrews until next week. At this point, the Yankees don't have any idea when Sabathia will be back. Ugh.
Thursday's studs & duds
Stud: Another nice outing for Max Scherzer. If you take out Scherzer's 10-run debacle from June 17, his ERA this year would be 2.81. I guess there's no chance you had him benched that day, huh?
Stud: What in the world has gotten into Steve Pearce, who had four more hits and two more RBI on Thursday?
Dud: Phil Hughes allowed seven runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Yankees. Hughes looked great into mid-June, but after a few bad starts, his ERA has crept up to 3.95.
Dud: If you still own Ernesto Frieri, don't click this link.
News & notes
The Rangers were worried about Thursday's game being delayed or shortened by rain, so they pushed Yu Darvish's start back to tonight, when he figures to strike out at least 29 Mets.
After some DL worries, Hanley Ramirez was back in the Dodger lineup on Thursday. However, he probably won't play every day this weekend, so be careful in daily lineup leagues.
Reminder: There are a handful of day games today, starting with Cubs-Nats at 11:05 a.m. ET. The pitching matchup there is Jason Hammel (7-5, 2.98 ERA) versus Tanner Roark (7-5, 2.98 ERA). Weird, huh?
Giants 1B Brandon Belt is expected to return to the lineup tonight and bat second. Belt was breaking out before his thumb injury, with nine homers in 35 games.
The Rockies hope that they'll get OF Carlos Gonzalez (hand) back in the lineup by next Friday.
Against Giants' ace Madison Bumgarner, Matt Adams batted third for the Cardinals on Thursday, while Allen Craig sat. A day off against a tough lefty, while leaving Adams and Oscar Taveras in? Hmm ...
Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (oblique) will make a rehab start on Monday, with an eye on returning shortly after the All-Star break.
On Thursday, the Yankees demoted IF Yangervis Solarte and called up 3B Zelous Wheeler, who hit a home run in his first big-league game against the Twins. Wheeler has modest power (seven homers, .834 OPS at Triple A this season), but he's a minor-league journeyman and will be a part-time player, so let's not get too excited.
Tonight's pitching matchup at Coors Field is Clayton Kershaw against ... Jair Jurrjens? Yep - the Rockies traded for Jurrjens on Wednesday. He had a 4.46 ERA in six Triple-A starts with the Reds, so don't expect much.
Vance Worley was solid in a loss to the D-backs, so we're up to 53-39 on the season. The weekend picks are Jon Niese (owned in 29.2 percent of FOXSports, com leagues) tonight against the Rangers; Jose Quintana (14.1 percent owned) on Saturday versus the Mariners; and Padre righty Jesse Hahn (37.9 percent owned) on Sunday against the Giants.
I'll be on vacation next week, but colleagues Ryan Fowler, Joel Beall and Adam Meyer will pop in here with updates. Happy Fourth of July, everyone!
