Tell us how you became a FOX Sports Girl
A friend told me about the competition being held to find a new FOX Sports Detroit Girl. I was just graduating with my Masters in Accounting and had a full-time accounting job solidified, so I wasn't sure if I had time to take on a completely different role. The more friends and family I talked to about it (they all know how big of a sports freak I am), the more I realized how much I would love a position as a FOX Sports Girl. I entered the competition, got more support than I could have even imagined, and everything fell into place. It was a life-changing moment and I am SO proud to represent my city of Detroit and our teams.
What has been your favorite experience as a FOX Sports Girl?
My favorite experience as a FOX Sports Girl is VERY hard to choose. There have been so many great games and events I have attended. My favorite would probably be going to the Big Ten Championship game: Michigan State vs. Ohio State. Of course, my SPARTANS beat the Buckeyes! It was an unreal environment and although the Spartan fans were outnumbered, the victory was as sweet as ever! Also, Super Bowl weekend in NYC with some of the girls from the other regions was an unforgettable experience.
What is your favorite sports memory?
My favorite sports memory was attending Justin Verlander's first no-hitter with my dad, grandma and grandpa in 2007. Talk about nerve-wracking! After losing my grandma (who I was extremely close with), I look back on those memories, and they become even more meaningful.
For the ultimate sports fan, what are the three things you recommend them to experience in your city?
The coolest thing about Detroit is we have all four sports representing our city. Three of the four are right in the heart of Detroit. Go to a Tigers game at Comerica Park, a Lions game across the street at Ford Field, and a Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena. While you're at it, check out the Renaissance Center (my other stomping grounds) for some great restaurants and a great view across the water over to Canada. So I guess that's four things, but all within walking distance!
Who has been the greatest influence on you being a sports fan and why?
By far, my father. I was the son he never had, so whether I liked it or not, I was bound to become a die-hard Detroit sports fan. If I wanted to stay up past my bedtime, the only way was watching overtime of the Pistons game or extra innings of the Tigers game. Whether it was an intense playoff game or watching the VHS of a preseason game he recorded (who records preseason games?), all we did was watch sports. I went to games with him, he kept me sharp on my stats. After many years of that, I can honestly say I would not have had it any other way and I am glad he influenced my love for Detroit and our sports.
If you could play any position/role on any team what would it be and why?
I would want to be the ace pitcher or the starting quarterback. Being a business woman, I tend to take on leadership roles. As a leader, you must be sure you have a solid team to support you in order to make the group as a whole work effectively and successfully. It is the same way for sports. It is all about the team as a whole, but the attitude and actions of the leader of that team can have a profound effect on the outcome of the season.
Girls are involved in many community and charitable initiatives. Please tell us about your experiences and if you have a favorite charity or group that you work with.
We have recently teamed up with the Humane Society of Huron Valley in an effort to increase awareness and money for many homeless animals. I have worked with other Humane Societies as well as Detroit Dog Rescue in the past. I took in a little hedgehog a friend was going to get rid of, and I am determined to one day have a house full of rescues. I am very passionate about animals and believe every one of them deserves a loving home. Stephanie and I are more than thrilled anytime we have an event that has to do with any type of furry friends.
The FOX Sports Girls participate in the annual Spring Training to the Troops trip. What ties to the military do you have? (Family, friends?)
I do not have any close ties to the military, but I am very thankful for everything our troops have done for our country. The constant dedication and motivation of the men and women in the military is unmatched. They deserve more appreciation than I am able to write in words.
First game you ever attended?
I asked my dad and he didn't even remember because I went to so many at a very young age. We believe it was a Lions game at the Pontiac Silverdome before they moved to downtown Detroit. I vividly remember chanting "BARRY, BARRY!" with the crowd to the Hall of Fame running back, Barry Sanders.
Who is your favorite person to follow on social media and why?
I have two: Miguel Cabrera and Andre Drummond. If you aren't already, go follow them on Instagram. Among the many photos and videos, you really get to see the personalities of these stars and how they interact with their teammates. They are both absolutely hilarious, which is awesome to see since most of the time fans see them in serious, highly focused game-mode.
Are you superstitious? If so, what are some of your pre-game/during the game rituals?
What major sports fan isn't? Being a highly optimistic fan who always believes my team is the best, I don't buy into "jinxes" unless it's a no-hitter on the line. I am very superstitious though when it comes to what I am wearing or where I am watching the game. If my Tigers are winning while I am sitting on the uncomfortable floor and wearing my Leyland jersey, I am not moving or changing until the game is over. If they are losing, time to change scenery and outfit!
What sports did you play growing up?
I starting dancing when I was 3 until middle school. At that point, I tried basketball and volleyball, but it was clear that I am more suited for knowing and watching sports than athletically inclined to play them.
What’s your favorite sports rivalry?
Michigan State University Spartans vs. University of Michigan Wolverines all day. Wolverines can claim that there is no rivalry or that we are the "little brother," but we all know the truth. The Spartans continue to grow stronger and more competitive in the two biggest college sports - football and basketball - thanks to two amazing coaches in Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio. Can you tell I went there for 5 years? So did my father and grandpa! I am a very proud Spartan alum. :)
What is your go-to super bowl dish?
My new favorite snack while watching any game is cucumbers and/or pretzels with ranch veggie dip!
Do you have any sports events on your bucket list?
Since being a FOX Sports Detroit Girl, I was able to go to a Tigers and Red Wings playoff game. When the Lions or Pistons make the playoffs in the future, I would love to go to at least one playoff game. Baseball being my favorite sport, an MLB All-Star game would be awesome. It would also be really cool to do a tour of the best or most historical stadiums such as Fenway Park or Wrigley Field.
What is your favorite sports movie?
Hard Ball. Great little league baseball movie, absolutely love G-Baby!
What # would you wear if you played sports?
#4.. It's always been my favorite number!
What would your walk up song be?
Bring Em Out - T.I. & Jay-Z
Name the local sports heroes from your hometown.
We have had many Detroit sports heroes during my lifetime with Barry Sanders, Isiah Thomas, and Nicklas Lidstrom as well as before my time with Gordie Howe and Al Kaline.
