Alberto Contador won the revived Milano-Torino road race on Wednesday, his second title since returning from a doping ban.

Contador moved ahead of the peloton on the final climb to the Basilica di Superga and held on for his first victory in a one-day, 123-mile race. Diego Ulissi of Italy was second, while Fredrik Kessiakoff of Sweden was third.

Contador returned from a doping ban in August, and won the Spanish Vuelta earlier this month.

He tested positive for clenbuterol en route to winning the 2010 Tour de France, blaming contaminated meat for the result. He lost his appeal in February.

The Spaniard dedicated the victory to compatriot Victor Cabedo, who died in an accident while training last week.

''It is something of an unexpected victory,'' Contador said. ''It is dedicated to all my teammates and to someone who was very much in my thoughts during the world championships, Victor Cabedo. Wherever he may be, this win is for him.''

The Milano-Torino was dominated by a breakaway from Alfredo Balloni and Federico Rocchetti, the pair holding a lead of nearly 9 minutes early in the race.

Contador said he weighed 5 pounds more than in the Vuelta and only rode 24 miles in training on Monday.

''I'm very, very happy to win, especially in Italy,'' Contador said. ''But the point was to get to the finish line with strength in my legs.''

The prestigious race is Italy's oldest cycling classic and was first staged in 1876. However, it had not been held since 2007.
