Tuesday he got his ticket out of town as the Dolphins announced the team had traded the offensive lineman to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick.
"We feel that this move is in the best interests of all parties involved," said Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey. "We wish Jonathan well."
The trade reunites Martin with Jim Harbaugh, who coached him at Stanford.
Martin left the Dolphins in late October claiming he had been bullied and harassed by teammates, most notably fellow lineman Richie Incognito. The resulting scandal became a national story and prompted an independent investigation into Miami's locker-room culture.
The investigation's results led to the firing of offensive line coach Jim Turner and trainer Kevin O'Neill.
Martin, 24, was Miami's second-round pick in 2012. The Pittsburgh native began last season at left tackle, then briefly returned to right tackle before bolting from the team's complex.
